18.07.19 / Typism 2019 Workshops

The Typism Conference is a little over two weeks away and there are also six hands-on workshops from speakers past and present.

If you're on the Gold Coast at the start of August, you'll LOVE attending these, but if you can't make it, our roving reporter Jasmine Holmes will be interviewing the presenters for social media and keeping you up-to-date with all the action.

Let's take a quick look at all six workshops now.

Rotate: The Art of The Ambigram
with Nikita Prokhorov
THURSDAY 1 AUGUST 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Ambigrams are words that can be read from a number of different orientations. This workshop will break down the process of ambigram design into simple steps. Starting with short exercises to understand the typographic principles and symmetry behind ambigrams, we’ll continue with in-depth case studies and fundamental techniques which you will use to create your first ambigram!

Traditional Copperplate for Beginners
with Moya Carroll
THURSDAY 1 AUGUST 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM

This class is structured around learning the basic strokes of the lowercase alphabet—once you master these, you can master anything. We’ll touch on majuscules but not focus on them. In this class Moya will focus on the things that she can’t teach online; correcting your pen hold, tilt your hand, and show you how to control your ink flow. Beginners are as welcome as people looking for a refresher.

Something to Say
with Kelly Spencer
FRIDAY 2 AUGUST 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Back by popular demand, Typism 2018 speaker Kelly Spencer will be teaching another Typism workshop this year. As artists, we have the privilege to be able to use our creativity as a voice. For this workshop, you will be creating a lettering piece with a message—something that individual participants feel passionate about, be it environmental, social, political, and so on.

Experimental Alphabets
with Kate Hursthouse
FRIDAY 2 AUGUST 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Join Typism 2019 speaker Kate Hursthouse for a morning exploring how you can create experimental alphabets using new and unconventional tools and materials. Kate is a New Zealand artist specialising in illustration, calligraphy and hand lettering. This workshop will divert from traditional hand lettering and calligraphic techniques and focus on pushing the boundaries to create unique letterforms using tools such as ruling pens and balsa wood.

Decorative Letter
with Liane Barker
FRIDAY 2 AUGUST 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Liane has over 36 years’ experience as a traditional signwriter and designer and is passionate about sharing the craft of traditional signwriting. Design your own Typeface
with Wayne Thompson
FRIDAY 2 AUGUST 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM

In this four-hour workshop with, you will learn how to make your idea for a typeface come to life. You’ll start with some basic principles about proportions, consistency, legibility, and a little bit of history. Then you’ll get drawing, and learn how to apply your idea consistently across the full character set. This workshop is sponsored by Delve Fonts.
