2019 GOOD DESIGN AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Winners of Australia's peak international design awards – the highest honour for design innovation, were announced last night on 11 July 2019 at the 61st annual Australian Good Design Awards Ceremony. The coveted top award, the Good Design Award of the Year was awarded to the revolutionary Inventia Rastrum 3D Bioprinter (pictured above) that is helping to cure cancer, designed by Inventia Life Science and Design+Industry. The inaugural Women in Design Award was presented to Sharon Gauci, the Executive Director of Industrial Design at General Motors, the first Australian woman to hold this position. The Good Design Award for Sustainability was awarded to RangerBot, an underwater robot that is helping save the Great Barrier Reef. More HERE.

2019 GOOD DESIGN AWARD FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Celebrating its tenth year in recognising the highest level of sustainable design practice, the Good Design Award for Sustainability went to RangerBot, designed by QUT and Designworks and commissioned by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. RangerBot is the world’s first vision-based underwater robotic system designed specifically for coral reef environments. It empowers reef managers, researchers and community groups with intuitive, customisable and affordable robotic tools to upscale underwater monitoring of the Great Barrier Reef, control marine pests such as the Crown-of-Thorns starfish and monitor and map reef health indicators like coral bleaching and water quality. WOMEN IN DESIGN AWARD

The inaugural Women in Design Award attracted more than 60 nominations, with an international jury panel of esteemed experts awarding the accolade to Sharon Gauci from General Motors. Ms Gauci was appointed to Executive Director, Industrial Design at General Motors in January 2018 and is responsible for leading a creative team of over 180 people in many of GM’s studios across the globe including North America, Australia, Korea, Brazil and China. The Women in Design Award was established this year in response to the significant gender imbalance within leadership roles in the design and creative industry, and to recognise and celebrate women who have made significant contributions to the industry.
