13.02.18 / AGDA VIC / The Year Ahead

Vincent With Poster 976 607

Hello and welcome to what will be a huge 2018 for AGDA Victoria.

We have a diverse program of events and new initiatives that will suit all design professionals, students and those interested in design. We are also working in collaboration with Creative Victoria to help Victorian Design businesses export their services globally.

We are already off to a quick start, with DesignStudio last week, and this week we will feature Blair Enns, looking to improve the profitability of your design business. But you still have a chance to get your tickets for Design Shift on 28 February, where you will hear from four industry professionals working in the vanguard of design, strategy, media and technology, as they share their views on the future of the design industry.

Melbourne Design Week

Last year's inaugural Melbourne Design Week was a huge success, thanks to the efforts of the NGV and the collaboration of all the design associations to produce a program that covered the spectrum of Design disciplines.

The 2018 program for Melbourne Design Week (15-25 March), is looking even bigger. Our intention is to demonstrate the value that design and creativity bring to business and the community. While you should keep an eye out for the program, which will be released over the next few weeks, AGDA will be featured during the week with two amazing events. On 19 March AGDA x Pecha Kucha will be a lively discussion with seven leading designers about the role design plays in creating a more meaningful future.

We will also return for our next instalment of Business + Design on 22 March. This event sold out in 7 days last year, so make sure you secure a ticket as soon as it goes online!

Mentorship programme

After a successful expansion of the Design Mentorship program last year, we are looking to increase the number of spots available as well as run two streams in 2018. So if you are interested in either being mentored by a design professional, or if you would like to be a mentor, please register your interest by emailing vic@agda.com.au

2018 calendar of events

We have over 20 events planned for 2018, so now will be a great time to either renew or activate your AGDA membership. Along with an amazing range of benefits, members also receive a significant discount to all our events. For a full list of the benefits available to members go to /become-a-member

Event highlights include the next instalments of Design Business Basics, First Five Out and Spit & Polish, as well as a new series of initiatives that will look at celebrating our Design Legends - the design pioneers of the 1970s, 80s and 90s. We are also looking to produce Shot Down later in the year, highlighting those amazing projects that unfortunately didn't see the light of day. So, if you have a story to tell and some scars to show, let us know by emailing vic@agda.com.au

Hong Kong Business of Design Week

You may have heard last year that Melbourne has been named as the official partner city for Hong Kong Business of Design week (HKBoDW) in 2018. We are proud to have worked with the DIA, AIA and other Design industry associations and institutions, together with Creative Victoria to make this a reality - and are working towards highlighting Melbourne's design culture to an International audience.

We will be curating a program of Melbourne design speakers, and creating a few events, initiatives and an exhibition to be showcased in Hong Kong in December 2018. HKBoDW is one of the largest International Design Conferences, attracting over 100,000 visitors each year. This is a great way for Victorian Design businesses to start exploring the opportunity to export their services into the Asian and European markets.

Keep an eye out for more information, and your opportunity to come to Hong Kong as part of our delegation in December 2018.

2018 AGDA Victoria Councillors

I would like to congratulate last year's council for an amazing year, particularly our outgoing councillors for their tireless contribution - Dean Gordon, Matthew McCarthy, Andrew Kean, Emma Cameron, Luke Cameron, Mark Harvey and Charlie Ryan.

Also, a big shout out to Nancy Bugeja, who has sadly stepped down from the AGDA National board as the Victorian Director. Her contribution over the past 2 years has been enormous, and has had a significant hand in getting AGDA to the healthy and vibrant position that it is in today.

As a final note, I would like to introduce you to our 2018 AGDA Victoria Council. They all volunteer their time to create and manage the design events and initiatives that help make our design community accessible, stimulating and relevant.

The 2018 AGDA Victoria Councillors are:
Richie Meldrum - Vice Chairman
Tina Victoria - Secretary
Amber Bonney
Jenny McLaren
Paul Meeuwsen
Owen Richards
Luke Van O
Felicia (Flick) Eriksson
Shane Loorham
David Eynaud
Daniel Cookson
Anthony Wymond

So, please get on board for a huge 2018, we all hope to see you at our upcoming events. Feel welcome to contact me, or any of our Councillors, on vic@agda.com.au if you have any questions or if you want to know how you can participate more. And get along to our monthly After Hours for a drink and a chat with like-minded designers.

Cheers to all,

Vincent Lazzara
