The 2016 AGDA Victoria Mentorship Program is dedicated to bringing together experienced designers with those that may need help, advice, and/or experience.
The AGDA Mentorship Program is only available to current AGDA members with at least 3 years’ industry experience. This professional-level mentorship is tailored to provide participants advice and training for issues relating to those currently employed, seeking advancement within the industry or even starting their own practice.
The Program has 12 positions available, 12 mentors and 12 mentees.
The Program will run for a 4 months period, starting in mid June through to last week of October (6-8 x 1 hour sessions).
The Applicant will be required to:
Submissions close on the 3rd of June for the 2016 Program.
Applicants will then be collated and matched with potential Mentors by AGDA Victoria. If successful, each applicant will be contacted and offered the Mentorship via email and/or telephone.
The following list is an overview of the topics that can be covered during the Program. It is up to both mentor and mentee to define the scope of the Mentorship using these topics to create an outcome that gives both value and ownership to the mentee.
1. Business Development
Networking, marketing, niche markets, business focus, assessing competition.
2. Concept Development
Briefing, researching, brainstorming, sketching, processes, presentation, techniques, technical skills.
3. Staff Management
Recruitment, management techniques, briefing techniques, staff retention, team building, staff education & growth opportunities.
4. Presentation Techniques (Clients)
Researching techniques, presentation processes, focus, client backgrounds, tools & methods.
5. Starting/Running a Studio
Business registration, business development, client management, business resources, industry participation and invoicing.
6. Project Management
Processes, time frames, deadlines, invoicing, admininstration, client management.
Design ideation techniques, creative mood boards, design rational advice, digital reference sources.
8. Creative Research
Briefing, Research skills, methods, resources, processes, research, presentations.

Nancy Bugeja, Managing Director of HM Group, like her Melbourne-based practice, can’t be easily pigeon holed. Covering everything from conceiving advertising campaigns for prestigious local and international companies, to product design, Bugeja has her fingers across numerous design disciplines. A group dedicated to meaningful design, communication, product, art and publishing, the numerous arms of the HM Group tend to ‘feed each other’. And given the breadth of the work, it’s not surprising that leading companies seek out their skills.
Chris is an award winning designer and creative thinker who brings over 12 years experience working with innovative organisations – both large and small – within the education, government, automotive and finance industries to create compelling brand experiences. As Büro North's Design Director, Chris leads a team who is passionate about creating a better future by design, using evidence-based research and strategic design thinking to craft experiences with impact. He has lectured in Communication Design at RMIT and is currently the Chair of RMIT's Program Advisory Committee for Communication Design
Dominic Forde runs Melbourne design studio Forde + Nicol. Dom was born in Glasgow, Scotland and grew up between New Zealand and the UK. He is a graduate from Wellington School of Design and holds an MA in design from Central Saint Martins, London. With over 15 years design experience in northern and southern hemispheres Dom has developed an ability to communicate effectively with a wide and varied demographic. His work has received national recognition through AGDA and Create Awards programs and internationally through Tokyo Type Directors Club.
Vincent Lazzara, brand strategist and management consultant, Master of Marketing & Bachelor of Graphic Design and sessional lecturer for Swinburne University, Monash University and RMIT, has spent over 20 years developing brand, marketing and creative strategies within most industry sectors. As a strategist, the heart of what Vincent does is to create simplicity from complexity. This involves understanding deep strategic issues and uncovering marketing, branding and business opportunities.
Matt McKey is a graphic designer and illustrator living and working in Melbourne. He is the graphic design manager at Asahi Premium beverages and works with a breadth of brands such as Super Dry, Woodstock, Vodka Cruiser, Somersby Cider, Cricketers Arms, just to name a few. His career at Asahi spans 8 years and throughout that time he has seen the company evolve and develop their stable of brands. Matt’s area of expertise is packaging and promotion, collaborating closely with marketing and communication partners to take products from conception through to execution in market.
With over 17 years industry experience, Paul Monkivitch has worked across brand, design, art direction and communications in both Australia and the UK. Prior to founding Self–titled, Paul was Design Director at Cornwell and Designworks where he was responsible for leading designers through conceptual ideation, strategic direction and implementation of national and international brand strategies.
Adam is a co-founder and Creative Director at Thick, an interdisciplinary design agency focused on creating positive social and environmental impact. Day-to-day he works with leading businesses, government and not-for-profit agencies across public service, health, education and environment to build better lives for people. Previously he held the role of Digital Creative Director across the Ogilvy Melbourne group (DT, BadjarOgilvy and OgilvyOne) directing work for Honda, BMW, Mini, NAB, Bank of Melbourne and Foster's. In his work across Information Architecture, User Experience design, art direction, service design, digital marketing and content strategy, Adam has led multiple award-winning projects for the world’s most successful brands across Europe and Australia.
Simon is Founder and Director of PeptoLab, a Digital Agency in Melbourne. Founded in 2001, the studio has worked with clients ranging from Fairfax (Domain, Money Manager), ANZ, Penfolds, Ryco, Fosters Group and enjoys a range of specialist clients in various industries. Simon completed his BA at LaTrobe UCNV in Bendigo in 1993 and has worked around Australia and in the UK in medium-large agencies, helping roll out identities for corporations such as BP, BT, Rio Tinto and Sappi. Simon has been an AGDA contributor since 2004, including AGDA Victoria President for 3 years, a member of the AGDA National Council and has actively pursued initiatives to help promote the role of design in business at a grass-roots level.
Conlan is a motion designer who loves to make things move inside screens and make obnoxious beats from field recordings. He is currently working at FutureBrand in Melbourne, searching for the clearest way to express a brand's personality through animation and prior to that he worked at Interbrand.
Quan is a passionate creative with a distinguished career spanning Australia, South Africa and the USA. With a focus on holistic brand building, he has created campaigns, identity systems, design and communication for some of the worlds most iconic and influential companies including Nike, Swarovski, Calvin Klein, COTY, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Chobani, Qantas and Woolworths South Africa.
As a creative director and strategist of consumer branding Chris has lead design teams in some of the UK's and Australia’s top branding agencies, most recently at Landor Associates. In his 16 years in the industry Chris has produced campaigns and global re-brands for FMCG giants such as Unilever, Nestle, GSK and Mars, as well as creating numerous challenger brands across many categories.
Guillaume’s career began in 1995 with Havas Advertising London, and then Parisian boutique agency L’Agence Verte. During this time he worked on a variety of accounts ranging from fashion to social causes, the launch of Laboratoire Garnier’s Fructis range and a successful political campaign for the Green Party. Relocating to Australia in 1998 he first landed a job as Senior Designer with Lonely Planet to help shape the company new product concepts, and eventually moved to Melbourne advertising agency Pure Creative where. As Senior Art Director, he created memorable campaigns for such brands as Twix, Phillips and Mars. In 2003 Guillaume founded Sense wanting to bridge the gap between the graphic design and advertising industries. Over the past 13 years Sense has grown into a multidisciplinary creative agency employing 32 people.
Keith Walsh is the Creative Director of Studio Yeah who loves doing clever, beautifully designed work in any medium. He loves photography, typography, art, his Canon 6D and his polaroid SX70. He hates cucumber. Keith has 15 years experience in above the line advertising, web design and most recently he was the Creative Director and writer of Australia’s number 1 health app “Who’s your daddy?”
