WoD Lecture RMIT Side Steps

About this Event

‘WHOLE of DISCIPLINE’, or WoD, is a long-running initiative by RMIT’s Communication Design department; a lecture series that serves as a space for knowledge sharing between emerging and established designers.

This year marks the very first time the event has been opened up to a wider audience outside of the student cohort, in an effort to share this opportunity with the broader community.

This semester’s WoD aims to build on the foundation of past lectures while shifting the emphasis away from the purely technical side of design discourse; focusing less on the work itself and more about the life of it.

“Happy-faced, I’d feel much worse if I’d, not embraced the life diversified.” —Ira Gershwin, Weaken a Bit

Lecture No. 3, ‘Side Steps’

This talk involves creatives who have a design focus in their practice, but have ventured away from the typical notions of what it means to be a ‘designer’.

The main question: ‘how has design-thinking influenced your work, and how has it led you to where you are now in your career?’.

Claudia Lau: Ceramic Designer, at House Editions
Callum Croker: CGI Designer, (freelance)
James Vinciguerra: Graphic Designer and Illustrator, (freelance)

Storytelling and trade has always occurred on these lands, and we acknowledge the Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung language groups of eastern Kulin, on whose unceded lands design and business continues here in Melbourne. In response to the Countries we work and live on across Australia, we respectfully acknowledge these Nations and language groups, and their Ancestors and Elders, past and present.
