August / Erik Brandt / Creating Design Dialogue — Melbourne

Ficciones Typografika and collaborative experimentation

Leading design thinker, Erik Brandt will be discussing his personal practice, his work in education, and his seminal Ficciones Typografika project that has now been celebrated in a publication by Formist.

Erik Brandt is Chair of the Design Department and Professor of Graphic Design at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Brandt is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) and also serves as a member of the International Executive Committee. Educated internationally, his creative and research interests focus on issues of globalization that affect and drive the complexities of intercultural visual communication systems. He began his career as a cartoonist in Japan in 1994 and has since found focus largely in print media.

Brandt authored the design blog, Geotypografika (Visual Communication und Wissenschaft) and was curator of Ficciones Typografika, a project dedicated to typographic exploration in a public space featuring hundreds of posters by established and up-and-coming designers, wheat-pasted to a 72” x 36” poster board attached to the wall of his Minneapolis garage. The Ficciones Typografika project was also documented in the book 1642, published by Formist. Brandt maintains a small graphic design studio, Typografika (Visual Communication und Konditorei). His own work has been exhibited internationally and he has also received recognition for his very, very silly short films.

Copies of the Formist publication Ficciones Typografika: 1642 will be available to purchase at the talks.
