Seven by Seven Talk Series Gold Coast 2018

The Seven by Seven Talk Series promotes collaborative design practice on the Gold Coast and celebrates the creative culture, leisure and lifestyle of the local community. This unique Gold Coast initiative provides connections and networking opportunities for emerging and established design professionals, design students and design related organisations with an aim to initiate collaborative projects that stimulate the design community on the Gold Coast. This year our talk features three local guest speakers covering topics which relate to various design disciplines.

Speakers include:

Criena Gehrke is the CEO of HOTA, Home of the Arts and Cultural Precinct project. She has a diverse and eclectic background in arts management ranging from stage manager to policy-maker. She is a previous Executive Coordinator of City of Gold Coast’s Arts and Culture Unit where she was instrumental in the development of the City of Gold Coast’s Culture Strategy 2023. Criena has a passion for the role culture can play in building stronger and more connected communities. She truly believes that art can change the world.

Andrew is the Principal of brand agency Hoyne. They’re a firm of 75 people, and they’ve been in business for 27 years. As a leader in brand creation, Andrew has has worked on internationally renowned brands from Starbucks to Nike, created the drum logo for Triple J, designed stamps for Australia Post, created a leading beer brand in Pure Blonde, rejuvenated heartland food and beverage brands from Vegemite to Peter Lehmann Wines and rebranded Hudsons and Snooze.

In recent years Hoyne has evolved their service offer, working closely with developers, government and councils with a core focus is place and property. They help to create recognisable landmarks across Australia. Andrew’s belief that we can do more to create meaningful places, led him to publish The Place Economy, a 400-page resource book that presents thought-leadership on best practice placemaking from around the world. It shows that investment in better places leads to greater profit for developers and investors, and results in economies that perform better and communities that are happier and healthier.

Recently, Andy spoke at over 20 local and international conferences and events. Last week he spoke at SXSW in Austin, Texas and later this year he’s speaking at industry events in Singapore, New York and Belgium.

After 30 years running a full tilt, all consuming and life affirming fashion business, Lydia decided to come full circle and decided to preach what she practiced.

Easton Pearson developed a reputation for lighthearted, unconventionally decorative, trendless clothing and built a devoted clientele in many countries around the globe. They sold to many of the world's most recognised stores, including Browns of London, Bergdorf Goodman in New York, and Lane Crawford in Hong Kong. One of the biggest highlights was the Easton Pearson exhibition at GOMA, Brisbane in 2009, viewed by over 80,000 visitors.

With a passionate interest in fabric, decorative technique, artisanal making, and independent design, Lydia is fully immersed in the futures of the brightest and most promising design students, guiding them in their studio practice and collection development, at QUT Brisbane.
