November / DIA ACT / Design is Waste is Design

Join the ACT Branch Committee for drinks and nibbles and a discussion with Andy Marks and Niklavs Rubenis as they present waste as an issue of and for design. Using case studies from their own practices, Andy and Niklavs will cover topics such as design, ethics, sustain-ability, making and approaches to the re-use and repair of limited resources. This event will be moderated by Wendy Johnson, Director of Clarity Communications and Director of FASHFEST.

Andy Marks is a social entrepreneur, impact designer, program director and all-round positive change agent. He leads and advises purpose driven organisations designing the Impact Producer role for ABC’s War on Waste, originating the Fix and Make festival for Molonglo Group and ACT Government, and as founder and CEO of Sleeping Bags Social Enterprise upcycling end of life luxury hotel bed linen in partnership with the world’s leading hotel groups. Andy is an advisor to OzHarvest, Planet Ark and Responsible Cafes.

Niklavs Rubenis is a designer, maker and academic with a diverse studio and research practice. He has been involved with design projects spanning community, non-profit, residential, commercial and cultural institutions, and has had work exhibited and presented nationally and internationally. Rubenis is involved in a range of national curatorial and collaborative projects, regularly writes for publications, and has been the recipient of industry funding, grants and awards. He currently serves as a Councillor on the DIA ACT Branch Committee and lectures at the School of Art & Design, Australian National University.

Wendy Johnson is the owner and founder of Clarity Communications, which opened its doors for business in the capital 20 plus years ago. Wendy holds a Masters in Journalism and has worked in the media, public relations and writing/editing space for three decades. She is also a Director of FASHFEST, Canberra’s red-carpet fashion event, is a food reviewer and a freelance writer.
