On Friday 8 November, we welcomed the Australian design community to sunny Brisbane to enjoy what was a huge weekend of good times and great people. 2019 was one of the biggest Awards years to date, so attendees needed plenty of time to discover, to recover and to connect with one another.
The weekend kicked off with a casual evening in Brisbane’s vibrant West End. There were plenty of bars, restaurants and pubs along Boundary Street to Vulture Street but we pulled a select few out for highlighting. The party started at the Wandering Cooks on Fish Lane and ended up at The End bar on Vulture Street, with a number of attendees taking advantage of the many other options in between for food and drink.
We had a great night in Brisbane for the awards weekend with AGDA QLD turning on a show for us for the AGDA Design Awards presentation night at the Queensland Art Gallery. What an amazing night sitting amongst the fabulous art and experiencing the buzz throughout the room. This year we had the largest number of entries in an awards program, even including the biennial years. This translated into more trophies to hand out on the night than we’ve ever had to manage. Luckily we were able to keep things running smoothly with some deft pre-night organisation by Anita.
A huge thank you to Lindsay Tucker and her team for the hard work to pull the night together, and special thanks to our MC for the night, Jordan Kadell, and Kevin Finn who introduced and interviewed the winners of the Studio of the Year and Emerging Designer of the Year awards.
A special mention also to Shane Keane and Simon Mundy, who along with Steve Robbins and myself, help facilitate the awards jury weekend in August, where our jury review and assess thousands of individual entries to provide the results we celebrate on the night. These awards would not run without their invaluable input.
