I chose The Department of Social Services as my Judges' Choice because I think it is both a beautifully crafted piece of motion and serves its purpose as an advertisement in an effective and tasteful way. This piece tackles a difficult narrative in a careful and respectful manner through a creative and original concept that has a certain elegance to it. There is such a craft to the animation through the subtle creation of depth in the stars, to the beautiful 3D moves in cel, and the emotions given to character through their animated body language. The combination of colour palette, music, and composition works perfectly to draw an appropriate emotional reaction out of the viewer in such a short period of time, which is an incredibly effective use of storytelling.
I really loved this spot and found it especially powerful and emotional. The message is clear, the design is strong, and the technique of using minimal animation with striking visuals is effective. I love the 3D movement on the house and the use of textures that makes every frame a beautiful illustration. It's for a good cause and hits home on all levels, making the final product greater than the sum of all its parts. Well done.
