AGDA has been requested to publicise a design competition for the image of
the Melbourne Fringe Festival 2001. The contest, which is held each year
ahead of the event, is an integral part of presenting the festival in a
fresh and contemporary manner each year.
The cultural nature of the event -- along with its not-for-profit platform -
is something which AGDA is happy to support in this way.
To this end, AGDA will be providing one panel member for the judging of the
competition.
Any enquiries regarding the competition should be directed towards the event
organisers via the contact details listed below.
Please note that the deadline for entries is 4 May
Melbourne Fringe Festival 2001
Image Design Competition Brief
Melbourne Fringe requires an image for the 2001 Melbourne Fringe Festival Melbourne Fringe is a key Victorian arts organisation committed to encouraging and developing innovative, independent and experimental art. The three week festival encompasses all art forms including performance, cabaret, visual arts, music, film, spoken word, dance, multimedia and outdoor performance.
This is a great opportunity for your design to gain wide exposure throughout Melbourne, Australia and across the world. The design will be promoted in the weeks leading up to, and during, the Festival as the identity and public face of the 2001 Melbourne Fringe Festival. 80,000 copies of the Program, banners, posters and on the street marketing will feature your design.
We don't want to restrict your ideas about this design. We don't have a particular style or image in mind. Surprise us! But if you're not sure where to start, maybe think about these questions. What does the year 2001 signify? What does Fringe stand for in this new millennium? Are we imagining a hi-tech future or drawing on our rich past? Is Fringe just about 'art'?
* Design must be a simple strong image.
can be drawn, photographed, type-based, digital
* Design needs to include, as a key component, the words:
Melbourne Fringe Festival and 23 September -- 14 October 2001
this will be unique to the 2001 Festival and is not related to the organisation logo
* Must be suitable and adaptable to a variety of applications
including the Fringe program and poster, black & white print media and Fringe t-shirts and merchandise and a logo to be placed on all Fringe advertising.
* Use as many colours as you like
must reproduce clearly at any size in black & white, 2 colours and 4 colours. You may wish to include examples of these various application formats.
Conditions of Entry
* Present as many concepts as you like in a form that makes it easy to view
for judging.
* Clearly label your entry with your name and phone number and deliver to the Fringe office before May 4th.
* The winner gives Melbourne Fringe full use of the image to be used extensively and exclusively at its discretion.
* The winner will be expected to further develop their design with Melbourne Fringe and our Program designers to final artwork.
* Melbourne Fringe hopes to exhibit design entries in North Melbourne Town Hall Arts House during the Festival in September. Please contact the Fringe Office if you wish to collect your artwork. All artwork must be collected by November 30th 2001. Work left at Fringe after that date may end up being thrown out. Sorry, but we don't have the storage space.
Judging / Prize
Submissions will be judged by a panel of Fringe board members and staff, graphic designers and sponsors. The winner will be notified by May 18th. Prize to be announced but we're working on it! Last year's winner, Damien McGrath, won a package from Macromedia. The winner will be acknowledged in the Fringe Festival program.
