AGDA Poster Annual 2011 Jury Member Ken Cato

Ken Cato is an Australian designer with an international reputation. He is Chairman of Cato Purnell Partners, established in Melbourne in 1970 and with offices in Sydney, Wellington, Madrid, Guadalajara and Dubai and representative offices in Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Perth, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Guangzhou, Jakarta, Lahore, London and Mumbai.

As a graphic designer, his work has earned him an international reputation and encompasses all facets of corporate and brand management and design. He has won numerous international and Australian design awards, and his work is represented in museums and galleries throughout the World. He is a long-standing member of Alliance Graphic Internationale and is a past AGI President (1997 - 2000).

The World's largest student design conference was founded by Ken Cato in 1991. For more than twenty years, agIdeas International Design Week now attracts annually over 4,500 young designers and over 40 speakers from around the World.

In 1995, Ken was awarded the first Australian Honorary Doctorate of Design from Swinburne University and was inducted into the ‘Hall of Fame' of the inaugural Victorian Design Awards. Ken is a foundation member of the Australian Writers and Art Directors Association, a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, ICOGRADA, Australian Graphic Design Association, Design Institute of Australia (Hall of Fame inductee in 2005), Australian Marketing Institute, Industrial Design Council of Australia, and is Patron of the Australian Academy of Design. In 2006, Ken was awarded the Victorian Premier's Award for Design Leadership and in 2009 was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Executive Board of ICOGRADA.

Ken is also an acclaimed author and has written numerous books. Major design publications include three editions of ‘First Choice' Published in 1989, 1996, 2003. ‘GD 3D - Graphic Design in the Third Dimension', ‘Design for Business', ‘Cato Design', ‘Design By Thinking', ‘Cato Partners' and the recently released ‘Experiences', present the company's philosophy and a selection of projects. The publication about Ken, ‘Ken Cato: The Dimensions of Design' forms part of the International Graphic Design Series published by Images Publishing, 2002.

The theme for the 2011 AGDA Poster Annual is "Inspired by Music". Entrants are invited to be inspired and interpret this theme however they wish. Music is perhaps the oldest of humanity's creative endeavours. It is both an art form as well as a type of communication. The world over music is a source of entertainment, celebration, worship and expression. The diversity of music reflects the soul of the world and binds us all. We all experience music at emotional and cultural levels. It offers us our finest moments and records our trials and our joys. This is the power that we hope you can capture.
