agIdeas 2011 International Design Week Program Announced

agIdeas 2011 International Design Week brings together 40 inspirational leaders
in design to Melbourne from Sunday 1 until Thursday 5 May

agIdeas 2011 International Design Week is one of the largest and most prestigious
design festivals in the world. It presents an extraordinary program of events that
celebrate design excellence and promotes the value of design driven innovation.

Speakers in 2011 include: Susan Bond (USA); Oslo Davis (Australia); Sascha Lobe
(Germany); Iain McCaig (USA); Fanette Mellier (France); Ken Miki (Japan);
Per Mollerup (Denmark); Frances Rings (Australia); Wout de Vinger (Netherlands).

agIdeas is made up of a number of distinct events and these include:

International Design Forum
40 of the world's leading designers discuss their ideas and inspiration over
three days.

Advantage business breakfast forum
International pioneers of digital connectivity: Susan Bonds, USA; Natan Linder, (MIT)
USA; Shane Moon, Canada; & Sanky UK will give insights on the powerful new ways
of understanding & interacting with consumers through this technology.

In Conversation
A public discussion with four leading designers Susan Bonds, USA; Ken Cato,
Australia; Iain McCaig, USA; and Sanky, UK; chaired and moderated by Alan
Saunders, presenter of ABC Radio National's By Design program. This will be
recorded for broadcast.

Futures
An inspiring career presentation & expo for secondary students, their parents
and teachers. Speakers at the two hour presentation include: Iain McCaig, USA;
Nick Bell, UK; Jungleboys, Australia; Susan Bonds, USA; Stephen Dupont, Australia;
Dean Gorissen, Australia; Nick Hogios, Australia; and Adam Hunt, Australia; each
revealing the inside stories of their brilliant careers. This is a great way to understand
what is possible in a design career and the influence that design increasingly has
on all industries.

NewStar
Design competition for new and recent graduates with shortlisted work exhibited
at the Melbourne Museum.

Masterclasses
A full day workshop with leading international designers: Nick Bell, UK; Natan
Linder, (MIT) USA; Iain McCaig, USA; and Fanette Mellier, France.

 Studio Access
Young designers registered for agIdeas have the opportunity to visit Melbourne's
leading design studios.

Design Research Lab
A one day forum for design educators, researchers and practitioners to present design
research papers to their peers. It aims to create awareness of new knowledge in the
areas of multidisciplinary design practice and its benefits, and the relationship between
design practice and education.

Next
A new event, agIdeas 2011 Next is a program of activities aimed at encouraging
primary age children to become champions of good design. Primary schools from
across Melbourne have been invited to register a team of their most innovative
students across ages to participate in this one day event. The activities include a short
forum with internationally renowned designer Ken Cato, Cato Purnell Partners. Each
team will visually express their ideas on large ‘puzzle' pieces that will be fitted together
to form a public artwork in the form of a giant sculptural mural.

agIdeas International Design Week was founded by Ken Cato and managed by the
Design Foundation.

agIdeas 2011 International Design Week from Sunday 1 May to Thursday 5 May
2011 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Plenary 2, 1 Convention
Centre Place, South Wharf.
