If you are under the age of 21 and studying design, then you're eligible to enter Playing for Peace, our international competition, and have the chance to see your design part of an actual M.A.D. for Peace deck of playing cards.

This is the first project in our Peace by Design portfolio whereby we challenge students and professional designers to find new and engaging ways to deliver M.A.D's mission to get everyone, from all backgrounds and of all ages, physically ‘doing' peace and making peace a conscious thought in all we do.

The Playing for Peace competition evolved from a presentation Gill Hicks gave in her home town of Adelaide, South Australia to Foundation course graphic design students at TafeSA Technical Centre for Printing and Visual Communication.

Tim Saunders of TafeSA says "When Gill visited us she told us about how M.A.D's work is informed by her personal experience - her survival of the terrorist bombings - as well as her professional background in design and the arts. Inspired by her story and the design and details on M.A.D's website, we immediately took up the challenge she set to find a way of encouraging peace at a level of personal and global interaction. Creating the concept of a pack of 52 cards was not only our way of bringing about peace through personal interaction but also seemed a fitting way to remember the 52 lives lost due to the bombings of 7 July 2005."

"It will be an amazing sight to see the winners' designs reproduced as an actual set of playing cards," says Gill. "Wouldn't it be great to see passengers in airports, on planes and trains, students in common rooms, or families at home using a set of M.A.D. playing cards...!"

To become a part of this exciting challenge, just follow these easy steps:

l. Read the Competition Brief and Conditions of Entry on this, the M.A.D. website.

2. If you are eligible and decide to get involved just follow requirements on the Brief - and don't forget to use the M.A.D. templates!

3. Make sure you submit your entry by midnight on Friday 17 December 2010.

We'll be releasing details about the judges soon. Winners will be announced on Australia Day, 26 January 2011.
