Welcome to New AGDA Members

Building Brand Australia Delay

B&T reports that "the Federal Government's $20m Building Brand Australia initiative is facing delays after failing to appoint an agency by its February deadline, with the pressure now on for it to meet its scheduled international launch in May" at the Shanghai Expo.

The brief was to create a new Australian brand that would improve the country's international trade relations, as well as encourage investment and education opportunities.

Austrade are overseeing the tender process and the selection panel, which includes senior representatives from Tourism Australia and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

STW Group, M&C Saatchi, Sapient Nitro and George Patterson Y&R, in partnership with Landor, have been shortlisted contenders for the account.

AGDA Benchmarking Survey Reaps Excellent Returns

Only in its first 6 days, and the AGDA reaped more than 200 responses, anticipating respectable statistics for a much needed industry benchmarking report.

For business owners, some preparation of information is required to get the best out of the survey. Nothing too onerous, but important revenue (design, artwork, production, commissions) and expenditure (salaries, rent, car, utilities, telco, materials, suppliers) data that can be reasonably sourced from your accountant of your last tax returns.

If you haven't had the opportunity to participate in the survey, please log on to

http://surveys.agda.com.au/index.php?survey_code=0b94d429&login=1

and help AGDa gather vital information to share with you in The AGDA Industry Benchmarking Report - to be released at the end of April 2010.

More Writings from Graham Smith

Graham who has been co-opted as an AGDA editorial contributor, has developed another gem, interviewing three UTS graduates whom he tutored.

"In most visual communications companies, graphic design firms, branding consultancies-call them what you will-much emphasis is placed on making connections with the values of the client. While understanding the values of a client and working hard to convey them is a necessary (and obvious) task for a communicator for commerce, I want to suggest that another responsibility also applies: you need to connect to your own values as well."

In his current life Graeme is a Sydney based visual communicator with an interest in talking and writing about designing, and the places-both good and bad-it takes us. Some of this happens with work partner and editor/writer Heidi Dokulil under the aegis of Parcel and a government supported design entrepreneurship organisation called the Australian Design Unit. He also has a new venture: http://peonypress.com.au
