An interview with Justin Smith of Fish Associates

22nd February, 2010

Why did you become a graphic designer?
When I was 11 years old. I met a computer programmer, I did sprite animations for him that were used for computer games on Commodore 64 games. He then paid me. I thought, wow! I can get paid to do this.

What has been your personal key to success?
Working harder than the next man. When I get knocked down I get straight back up. I don't listen to negative people.

How do you feel graphic design has changed in Australia since you began work?
Gradually we have/are developing our own voice. I can recognize an Australian piece of design these days.

What advice can you offer a graphic designer embarking on their career?
Work hard. If you want it bad enough, you can have it all. Think and dream big. While you are young change studios every few years.
