AGDA's Tribute to Arthur Leydin

This tribute was read out early in the Eulogy of Arthur Leydin's funeral last week:

The Mildura Conference was the brainchild of Arthur Leydin's and the one held in 1998 was the cradle from which AGDA was born.

These Mildura Conferences as they are still referred, have stayed in the hearts and minds of the 50 designers who decided to march into history on that fateful day - 50 designers who stood on stage to declare their solidarity and form the truly representative association for the graphic design profession that is AGDA - and as they say, the rest is history.

Australia's design continuum, its practitioners and its industry owe a debt of gratitude to Arthur's vision, passion and tenacity.

The profession would not be what it s today. Thank you Arthur Leydin, Design Crusader.

National Qualifications for Visual Arts Craft and Design - Industry to Input

A Discussion Paper is now available for feedback from practitioners, industry organisations and educators during the first consultation phase of the national qualifications redevelopment. Input is important and welcome from mid- February to the end of March, and will impact on the detailed development phase of the project.

AGDA holds a key position on the National Project Reference Group.

The discussion paper provides a backdrop on the issues and challenges for the project; a review of ‘fitness of purpose' of existing units of learning and qualifications; and also outline descriptors and context for the proposed new qualifications, for which a number of group sessions have been scheduled as follows:

AGDA Industry Benchmarking Survey 2010 Launch

AGDA is pleased to announce that its Industry Benchmarking Survey will be launched next week.

Graphic design professionals are encouraged to participate so that valuable benchmarks can be determined for salary structures and packages, billing rates, correlations in revenue and expenditure, forecasts for areas of growth...

Resale Royalty Rights

Australian artists will receive a portion of the proceeds from the resale of their work with the passage of the Resale Royalty Right for Visual Artists Bill 2008 through Parliament. The legislation enshrines an important right for artists to receive royalty payments from subsequent sales of their artworks, both in their own lifetimes and carrying over to their heirs and successors for a period of 70 years after an artist's death.

The scheme will cover original works of art, such as a painting, a collage, a drawing, a print, a sculpture, a ceramic, an item of glassware or a photograph.

Under the government's scheme artists will receive five per cent of the sale price when works are resold through the art market for $1000 or more. The scheme will be prospective, applying to resales of original works acquired after the scheme takes effect allowing time for the art market to adjust to the scheme. The scheme is expected to be in place by mid 2010.
