Arthur Leydin (1932-2010)
"An effectively designed communication is as pleasurable as a great hamburger or the finest cuisine. What matters is care and professionalism in the making." - Arthur Leydin
Inducted into the Australian Graphic Design Association's Spicers Paperpoint Hall of Fame in 2000, Design Crusader, Arthur Leydin, graphic designer (1932-2010) died at 2am on Sunday 7 February, after a period of illness and care at the Gordonvale Hospital, south of Cairns.
A small service will be held at 2pm, Thursday 11 February, at B.J. Brady Funeral Directors Chapel, Cnr Sheppard Street and Bell Lane, Gordonvale QLD 4865.
Graham Rendoth, general manager and creative director of Reno Design, and good friend of Arthur and his long time partner Birgit, will say a few personal words as well as a statement on behalf of AGDA at the service:
"Arthur was a design crusader. He will be remembered as one of Australia's leading ‘design thinkers'. His many articles, talks and discussions on the ‘design process' and Australian design culture were commanding and erudite. Whether verbal or written he always communicated simply, with elegance. As a great letter writer, many of his colleagues will have received pages of opinion, usually written in his elegant long-hand."

Stephen Banham - Ambassador, The AGDA Student Brief
AGDA is delighted to announce that Stephen Banham, typographer and principal of LETTERBOX has accepted the role of Ambassador for the inaugural AGDA Student Brief "Words of Optimism".
Students in any field of an accredited tertiary design program will be invited to take part in a brief designed to promote their talent on a world stage. ‘Words of Optimism' is all about looking forward, whilst paying homage to the traditions and techniques that brought us to this exciting juncture in time.
The 2010 AGDA Student Brief exhibition will coincide with Icograda Design Week in Brisbane, 11 - 17 October 2010. Through the theme of ‘Optimism', Icograda Design Week in Brisbane 2010 aims to promote dialogue on issues shaping the nature and relevance of communication design practice today.
"Being an ambassador makes me feel very established, almost elderly. Titles aside, I would be happy to be involved... to help out on the project... the future of graphic design lies in us having conversations and engaging with people beyond our trade," declared Stephen.
Interestingly, Stephen's recent book Utopia Oblique, in his words, "looks at utopians who use typography and/or language to create a vision of an ideal world".
The AGDA Student Brief will be launched in March.
Dan Pike - Designer for the AGDA National Awards 2010 Collateral
Dan Pike has proudly accepted the role of Designer for the upcoming AGDA National Biennial Awards identity design and implementation program.
As founder of The Letter D, Dan develops and implements ideas for both established and start-up clients, governments and not-for-profit organisations - from veterinarians to art galleries - "ideas that maintain their integrity across a broad range of disciplines and application"... and with "a strong emphasis on distinctive typography and the effective delivery of information."
AGDA is equally proud, and delighted to have Dan's creative expertise for its premier design program. Keep an eye out for the call for entries in April!
