The Nth Degree
After a one-year hiatus, the AGDA Research Journal visual:design:scholarship has undergone a revival under the stewardship of one of its Managing Editors, Mark Roxburgh, University of Technology Sydney.
visual:design:scholarship is an internationally refereed, online journal that aims to stimulate, support and disseminate design research with a focus on visual communication design practice, pedagogy and philosophy. New directions, emerging challenges, future possibilities, experimental outcomes and alternative perspectives relevant to the Australasian context are of particular interest. Contributions to this context are called from local and international scholars.
A special pre-Christmas issue of refereed articles on ‘social dimensions of graphic design' has now been published on the website with Mark as editor and Margaret Woodward as guest editor. Invited contributors include: Doreen Donovan, Liam Dee, Neal Haslem, Yoko Akama and Carolyn Barnes, Peter Schumacher, Stuart Medley and Nicola Kaye, Marius Foley.
The following links on the AGDA website lead to the journal.

Writings and Sitings
A big thank you to Adrian Shaughnessy for his insightful interview with Erik Spiekermann* (read excerpts 1 and 2 in Blog section), part of his latest project Studio Culture: the secret life of the graphic design studio published by Unit Editions. Shaughnessy, who was keynote speaker at the 2008 AGDA Conference, is a self-taught graphic designer based in London. After spending 15 years as creative director of co-founded studio Intro, Shaughnessy chose to pursue an interest in writing and work as an independent consultant.
Much appreciation are also due to two additional editorial contributors who have been co-opted to AGDA writings:
- David Whitbread is a previous AGDA Agenda newsletter Editor and currently Corporate Communications Manager for Australian Government Solicitor in the ACT. He is the author of The Design Manual (UNSW Press, Sydney, 2001) which won an Australian Award for Excellence in Educational Publishing in 2002, with a second expanded and revised version released in 2009.
- Graeme Smith is a Sydney based visual communicator with an interest in talking and writing about designing, and the places-both good and bad-it takes us. Some of this happens with work partner and editor/writer Heidi Dokulil under the aegis of Parcel and a government supported design entrepreneurship organisation called the Australian Design Unit.
