It’s Another World Record: Album Cover Art from the Studio of the World Record Club 1958-1976
16th April, 2009
AGDA Hall of Fame inductee Geoff Digby is featured in the newly released book, It's Another World Record: Album Cover Art from the Studio of the World Record Club 1958-1976. The book brings together more than 500 of the best original designs from the World Record Club, in a beautifully illustrated celebration of the studio and the impact that it had on graphic design in Australia in the 1960's and 70's. The book also showcases the work of many other World Record Club alumni including Max Robinson and John Copeland
The World Record Club began in Britain in 1958. It established its Australian counterpart two years later with its own cover art design studio, first at 330 Flinders Lane, and later, on Burwood Road in the Melbourne suburb of Hartwell. This book honours the ‘magnum opus' that was the creative output of the award winning World Record Club. The studio at WRC is still regarded by the Australian design industry as one of the most influential of that period. The hundreds of covers created more than 40 years ago still stand today as ‘classic artworks'.
Author and designer Geoff Hocking was a graduate of the Bendigo Technical college in 1956 and worked in the studio of the World Record Club for two years from 1966 to 1967. Like many young WRC designers it was his first job after school, and it was a great opportunity to be part of the exciting milleau of artists who came in and out of the studio led by Art Director Geoff Digby.
Geoff has also lectured in graphic design and illustration for the past 20 years, first at Swinburne and later at La Trobe University, Bendigo. Over that time he has written extensively on Australian social history and illustrated many books for children.
‘This book is a must for lovers of classical music, or all kinds of music; the collector of ephemera; designers and design students - who want to remember what great graphics were like in the days before the age of the computer'.
