Bright lights take the wank out of Melbourne design

ADB 2012 wants you catch up vol. 23
In some spaces the coffers are long empty; while others are making it, some are running to stand still; while others are going great guns with heads down. The consensus seems that we are peddling hard and doing our best to think beyond next week.
However, amid all stories of downs and ups, there is a whole bunch of stories where people, companies, and organisations have bucked the times and given the ADB generous doses of time, professional services, film making, editing, digital developing, fine printing, reams of paper, and access.
In the weeks leading up to the 2012 ADB November in Melbourne, you will note creative projects produced by Ryan and our committee members, along with a body of work developed by communication students - Third Year, Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication), Monash University, Art Design & Architecture.
An awards programme is a black hole hungry for communication work - thinking, theming, information and promotional content. As part of transforming the AGDA Awards, we saw this black hole as an opportunity to create a unique 2012 ADB space for emerging designers, professional designers, design crafts and services and a design admiring public.
Student designers are a vital part of day-to-day creative and design dialogue and we wanted to break the ground with our emerging designers taking the lead. Gene Bawden, Head Vis. Comms. Lecturer of Design Faculty at Monash, came to us early this year with a fantastic proposal - offering us seventy Monash design studio students for five months, available to probe, create briefs, solve problems make work and truly explore the idea of starting again.
Every Thursday we got together. Ryan set up the creative guidelines. Briefs were sprung and created in class. There was no homework, however all the thinking, debate, making and presentation all happened in eight mad hours. The outcomes were prolific and extensive, everything about this year's ADB Awards has been explored and tested. After five months numerous promotions, presentations, table decorations, projections, VJing, digital promotions, posters, coasters and placards have been discovered and developed.
Much of this work has been curated by Ryan and will be part of the awards night. When you come down to Melbourne many of these students will be part of ADB November. Take the time to say hi, they are shy at first, but only at first. Thanks again to Gene, the studio students of Monash University, Art Design & Architecture and staff at the university that supported our work.
