The Value of AGDA - Testimonial from Lucy Wells, Swinburne Student and AGDA Student Council Member
29th January, 2012
This week AGDA member Lucy Wells, Communication Design Student at Swinburne University of Technology and Member of the AGDA Student Council, shares her position on the value of AGDA membership:
As a student member of AGDA and the Victorian Student Council, I really value the connection that AGDA provides with the creative community. I believe that AGDA offers opportunities and experiences that can otherwise be limiting at University or TAFE.
Last year I volunteered at AGDA events such as Spit ‘n' Polish workshops, First Five Out Speaker Night, Folio Night and appeared in Desktop magazine along with my fellow student councilors.
I think as a student it is really important to be a member of AGDA and be involved in their events because it will encourage you to keep pushing in what might seem like a difficult path. I can also guarantee you will come away with such a buzz and a truckload of motivation and confidence for school assignments and portfolios.
By being a part of events like First Five Out, it didn't matter whether I was attending, volunteering or organizing, I was still able to meet other like-minded students who have now become some of my closest friends.
I have also had the opportunity through folio night and general meetings to get together with people working in the design industry and received encouraging, direct feedback about my work and the work the student council does.
If you're a design student who isn't just going through the motions and is passionate about learning, willing to network and plan a future in the creative industry, then I recommended becoming a member and getting involved with AGDA events. It will make you feel like you're apart of a creative community, not just another student and that's what I value most.
Check out some of the work the student council does on our blog and expect more exciting things for 2012
