Desktop’s 25th Anniversary Issue is Out Now
4th September, 2011
Desktop is celebrating its 25th anniversary of supporting the Australian design industry with the release of its latest issue.
The magazine was born in 1986 and since then has gone through numerous transformations including name changes, masthead changes, plus a handful of redesigns (the most recent being the March 2011 redesign) and has since added a website, awards programme and annual directory to its offering.
For the 25th anniversary issue, the team was privileged to bring on Andrew Ashton/Studio Pip and Co. as guest editor. The issue takes the form of a Time Capsule of Australian contemporary design culture, but in magazine format. “Throughout this space we have developed ideas and narratives that capture creative culture circa 2011. Young, old, emerging, established, boys and girls, digital, print, motion, actions, education, things and ideas – there is a dash of as much as we could round up,” says Ashton.
A highlight of the issue is the 16-page visual essay of printed ephemera from the past twenty years, collected by Ashton/Studio Pip and Co. (which is currently being exhibited as ‘Diamonds in the Rough’ at Lamington Drive in Melbourne). You’ll find a collection of familiar names who have contributed – Garry Emery, Warren Taylor, Lisa Loxley tell us their favourite design story from the past 25 years; Sam Barratt, Melanie Cousipetcos, Dan Pike, Anita Ryley; Graeme Smith and Amanda Roach document their workspaces, select a favourite book, and predict which aspects of design culture will still be around in the future; plus opinions from David Lancashire, David Pidgeon and more.
