FEATURE

Design - A Cultural Carrier
by Professor Dr. Jordi Montana

Everything in human society that does not come directly from nature is designed by man. Even natural products are normally presented in packaging and display specially designed brand names and logos. It is inevitable that both the designer and the person who commissions the design (the latter, be it a company or other kind of public or private organisation, also taking charge of production and the other creation and communication of images) will put across their own culture and the culture of their organisation. In this case culture can be defined as the set of values, beliefs and attitudes shared by the members of the organisation. Moreover, there is feedback creating another culture, an object and image culture, derived from the products, services and brands themselves.

MISCELLANEOUS NEWS

Call for abstracts: Icograda World Design Congress 2007

The Icograda Education Network (IEN) Conference will take place during the first two days of the Icograda World Design Congress, from 20-21 October 2007. It will bring together the worldwide community of communication design educational institutions. The event will include invited and refereed papers on design education and culture. Icograda is inviting abstracts from the international design community.

Designing Politics – The Politics of Design

IFG Ulm is once again inviting entries for its promotional programme on the topic of “Designing politics – The politics of design”. A sum  of EUR 50,000 is available to be awarded, and above and beyond that the award-winning projects will be supported by mentors at IFG Ulm.

Architects and designers and researchers from those and related  disciplines can submit their project applications through the IFG Ulm  website from 31.01. to 31.03.2007.

In 2006, IFG Ulm received 97 applications from 26 countries. In a  multi-stage, transparent process, 3 projects from Jerusalem,  Johannesburg and New York City were selected for awards. The high  level of international interest and the high quality of the  applications submitted showed that IFG Ulm has closed a gap with this
programme and its focus. For that reason, the programme is being re-opened in 2007.
