Torino 2008 World Design Capital Scientific Committee meets

The second Meeting of the Scientific Committee of Torino 2008 World Design Capital ended on Tuesday, 6 March 2007. Michael Thomson, Guta Moura Guedes and Enrico Morteo met with the staff of the Organising Committee for two days of fast-paced, constructive encounters concerning the elements of the initiative and just what Torino 2008 World Design Capital truly wants to be. The debate led to the definition of the organisational setup of the entire manifestation, including a subdivision into four specific, thematic macro-areas. Every related initiative will take place within these thematic areas.

Icograda welcomes new member in Ghana

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana is the newest member of the Icograda Education Network (IEN). The Department of Publishing Studies and Department of Communication Design offers programs in book design, illustration, computer integrated publishing, graphic design, printing, packaging design, multimedia and advertising.

Good 50x70 expands eligibility criteria

Good 50x70, an international social communication contest, was launched this year on 10 March. After the launch, the design community asked us to remove the age limit that we had proposed in the rules of the contest. The contest is now open to everyone who's willing to confront the stereotypes of social communication and deliver a truthful and meaningful message, without any limit on age, sex, race, religion, profession or favourite colour.

UN World Environment Day Poster/Event Listings

UN World Environment Day 2005 was held in San Francisco and featured a week of more than 200 community events based on the theme "Green Cities." These events were listed on the back of a poster that was printed with soy-based inks on paper made with 100% post-consumer waste. The illustration conveys the idea of cities and nature living in harmony.

Should clients cough up for pitches?

On 19 March 2007, the South African Design Council held a debate at Sappi Braamfontein on the contentious issue of free pitching in the design industry. Gary Harwood, Chairperson of think, elaborated on the reasons behind thinks no free pitching stance and the positive effect it has had on his business. Enterprise IG MD David Blyth, Cross Colours MD Adelle Wapnick and Espial's CEO Rudi Kruger will shared their differing opinions on the pitching issue, and then the floor was opened to discusson. Gillian Jones from Marketingweb covered the event.

Call for abstracts: Icograda World Design Congress 2007

The Icograda Education Network (IEN) Conference will take place during the first two days of the Icograda World Design Congress, from 20-21 October 2007. It will bring together the worldwide community of communication design educational institutions. The event will include invited and refereed papers on design education and culture. Icograda is inviting abstracts from the international design community.

Icograda past president delivers keynote at Pune Art & Design Festival

Helmut Langer, graphic designer of international reputation and past president of Icograda, will deliver the keynote address at the Pune Art & Design Festival, being held from 22-25 March 2007? His topic will be the fundamental world-wide challenge for a new design thinking: "Global Challenge for Sustainable Design". Other speakers are Peter A. Di Sabatino from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena/USA, Elena Caratti and Annamaria Formentini from Milano Politechnico, Nicola Morelli from Danmark, Dinish Karte and Sayalee Joshi from the National Multimedia Resource Centre in Pune.

PENTAWARDS: The best of world packaging design.

Packaging designers will soon have their own international competition dedicated exclusively to packaging design that will confer the awards for the best world creations. Pentawards will be THE reference in packaging creation. 40 categories divided into five groups (Beverages, Food, Body, Other Markets, Luxury) will set the background for the competition of creations from comparable markets. The international jury, which will be announced on 15 April, will be composed of marketing and packaging design specialists from Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Americas. The packaging placed on the market in 2006 will be judged for its creativity, impact (branding) and quality. Each category will be conferred 3 bronze, 2 silver and 1 gold Pentawards. The best of each of the 5 groups will receive a platinum Pentaward and the Best of the Show will carry off the supreme prize, the Diamond Pentawards, the trophy of which will be enhanced by a genuine 1-carat diamond certified by the Antwerp diamond exchange (in Belgium). Packaging creators (individuals, agencies, manufacturers) are invited as of now to register on http://www.pentawards.org so as to be kept informed about the opening of the competition, which will be accessible from 15 May to 31 July 2007. The results will be announced at the end of October 2007.
