DFA Award 2007: Recognising good designs in Asia
Half of the world's population lives in Asia. The mere fact that Asia in general is becoming more affluent presents any business with enormous development opportunities. This substantial and maturing Asian market has been the driving force behind many new and innovative creations that strives to meet the specific needs of the Asian society. The unique characteristics of Asian communities and consumers are becoming important design considerations for apparels, interiors, products and communications. Some of these outstanding designs have had tremendous impact on the Asian quality of life.

INDEX: AWARD shortlists 112 designs
The international INDEX: jury has short listed 112 designs for INDEX: AWARD, the
biggest design award in the world, which is presented in August under the patronage
of HRH The Crown Prince of Denmark. The 112 top nominated designs represent all seven continents. In the spirit of the INDEX: theme "Design to Improve Life", they address such diverse problems as water shortage, CO2 emissions, health, environmental sustainability as well as health and safety at work.

Icograda welcomes Thai Graphic Design Association as Professional member
Icograda is pleased to welcome the Thai Graphic Designers Association (THAIGA) as its newest provisional Professional Member. Based in Bangkok, THAIGA was founded in 2003, and is the country’s first professional association to represent communication designers.

International Fajr music festival is a ceremony that observed each year in Iran. This poster of typography was deigned for this festival. This poster uses the lines present in music, and writes a phrase from the 25th Fajr music festival. Also, the music's notes have the role of dots, echoing the dots in Farsi letters.

SEGD announces 2007 Design Award Winners
SEGD (the Society for Environmental Graphic Design), an international non-profit educational foundation, announces 32 outstanding designs to receive recognition in the highly competitive SEGD Design Awards Program, which recognises excellence in environmental graphic design. The winning designs were selected from 340 entries received from around the world, including entries from Argentina, Australia, China, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Germany, Thailand, England, and the US. Phil Engelke of ID8/RTKL chaired the event; the jurors were Lynn Befu, Anshen + Allen; David Gibson, Two Twelve Associates; Cybelle Jones, Gallagher & Associates; Hal Kantner, HOK Visual Communications; Carol Newsom, Newsom Design; and Alexandra Wood, The Holmes Wood Consultancy.
2007 Honour Awards include Thailand Creative & Design Center, National World War I Museum, Arizona Cardinals Stadium, Wall of Discovery, Los Angeles Metro and Alesari.
The honourees will accept their awards at the SEGD 2007 Annual Conference & Expo, which takes place from 30 May > 2 June 2007 in Boston, MA.

Open Position: Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography
The Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography is one of South Africa’s top design schools, operating as a private provider of higher education in the field of applied design. The Academy is seeking an Academic Head, an individual with a strong academic leadership background, who is able to provide visionary strategic impetus to the following processes:
- Curriculum evaluation and development=20
- Teaching and learning strategy, coordination, monitoring and evaluation=20
- Research promotion, coordination and development=20
- Academic quality assurance
The Academic Head will also perform limited facilitation duties at undergraduate level. The successful candidate will be a visual communication specialist with an in-depth understanding of all processes relating to quality assured academic management at a higher education level.
Applications close on 11 June 2007. Starting date is 1 August 2007, or as soon as possible thereafter.

PENTAWARDS 2007: The Competition is now open!
Packaging Designers have until 31 July to enter the competition. Choose from among 5 major categories (Beverage - Food - Body - Other markets - Luxury) and 40 subcategories, those that correspond optimally to the creations that they want to submit. In this world competition devoted exclusively to packaging design, a milk packaging will not be compared to a mineral water, nor will luxury products compete against consumer goods. Specific categories (Pet-Food - Distributor's brands - Fine foods - Fair trade) will be judged separately.
There is no need to send the packaging. With Pentawards, everything is done on-line. It is easier, faster, more economical and moreover makes it possible for all types of packaging to participate, whether the products are perishable, fragile, expensive, very heavy, very bulky, etc.
