Parliament: for the people, by the people
by Gaby de Abreu, Switch Group, South Africa

As a new democracy, South Africa needs new symbols to identify with, to look up to and draw inspiration from. With Parliament being the heart of the nation, its emblem in particular needs to span all nine of the provinces, and be understood in every language. Parliament thus began its search for a new emblem in 2006: something that would embody the spirit of the nation and capture the ideals and values of the Constitution. To make the logo even more representative of the people it serves, Parliament asked South Africans to help create its new logo, and then invited an experienced branding and design company to refine and implement this new corporate identity throughout the institution. This company was the Switch Group.

MISCELLANEOUS NEWS

Call for feedback: Designers of 2015

Earlier this year AIGA, the professional association for design, embarked on a journey to define the Designers of 2015. Now, in a series of articles published by the TAXI Design Network, AIGA is inviting designers speak up about the trends that will influence the design profession tomorrow. AIGA has partnered with Adobe, Inc. to understand what today’s clues reveal about the expectations for designers in the year 2015. The clues’ indicators are evident among educators, students, design studio principals and business leaders—since the very people who know the challenges designers are asked to solve each day have changed dramatically over the past twenty years. Yet many educational institutions and studios continue to think in terms of what more is expected of the “traditional” designer. AIGA and Adobe believe we have to change the marker from an idealised traditional perception that is out-of-date, to a new model of designers likely to populate most design enterprises in less than a decade.

SVA announces new MFA program in design criticism

The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York has established an MFA program in design criticism, the first graduate-level degree program dedicated to critical writing about design. The Master of Fine Arts in Design Criticism will prepare graduates for careers as design critics, journalists, curators, educators and design managers, by providing the intellectual tools for researching, analyzing, evaluating and chronicling all aspects of design. The program, which begins fall 2008, was developed by Steven Heller, cochair of the MFA Design Department at SVA, and the writer, critic, and educator Alice Twemlow, who will chair the new MFA Design Criticism Department.
