FAQ

Reality Check 1: Only 20% of jobs are advertised in newspapers or handled by placement companies (30 Mar 1998, Business Review Weekly, Aust.) Remarkable, huh? So what about the remaining 80% - where does that come from? Word of mouth and other 'informal' channels, probably - 4 out of every 5 successful applicants get their job through some sort of network.

Reality Check 2: Graphic design is a pretty small professional group in Australia. There are roughly 15,000 real designer jobs in this country, which is peanuts compared to other professions. So don't expect to find hundreds (let alone thousands) of job classifieds by trolling through the 'net. Your best bet is still personal networking.

If you're a recent graduate setting out into the job market, take a look at our three articles beginning with How To Get A Job - Part 1.

Still, it doesn't hurt to have a look, so here are some sites that have (as at March 2002) some graphic design positions listed.

http://www.equatorial-recruitment.com.au
Sydney-based specialist with a wealth of information on their site in the 'For Job Seekers' section, covering everything from indicative salaries to tips for working overseas, and a lot in between. Margaret Kirby and her team have a great network in the Sydney design community, and the agency is an AGDA member.

iD Personnel [5/6/1999]
http://www.idpersonnel.com.au
Small, independent, Sydney-based recruitment agency specialising in a number of areas, including graphic design. [Dana Kocanov]

Odyssey Recruitment
http://www.odysseyrecruit.com.au
Brisbane-based specialists in graphic design and multimedia.

Tenth House [1/9/2004]
http://www.tenthhouse.com.au

ADVERTISING & DESIGN

B&T
http://www.bandt.com.au/jobs.asp
Site of B&T, one of the two big advertising industry weeklies in Australia. Good selection of 'Creative' positions. [Shane]

AdNews
http://www.adnews.com.au
The other big advertising industry-focused weekly. Good selection of positions, with varying degrees of description. Sorted by recruitment agency, rather than type of position, so you need to read the whole (long) page. [Shane]

GENERAL JOB SITES

Employment Opportunities Australia
http://www.employment.com.au
A few graphic design positions listed. You need to search under "Media & Advertising" category, and enter "graphic design" in keywords. [Dorota Roslaniec]

Jobfind
http://www.jobfind.com.au
A jobs-only website, with a specific graphic design category. Most of the jobs seem to come from recruitment agencies.

JobServe
http://www.jobserve.com.au
Formerly JobNet, became JobServe in 2006 [ed]. Specialises in Information Technology (IT) jobs, but includes a reasonable number of web/multimedia design jobs. On the search page, enter "graphic design" into the Skills line. [Dorota Roslaniec]

MyCareer http://www.mycareer.com.au
Broad recruitment site, but with a lot of web design and related positions, with a few "pure" graphic design positions as well. Part of the Fairfax online empire (f2). When entering the search criteria, make sure you enter "graphic design" (including the inverted commas) otherwise you'll end up with hundreds of listings which include the word 'design' but have nothing to do with graphic design. [Shane]

CareerOne
http://www.Careerone.com.au
This is a News Interactive site, owned by News Limited, eg. newspapers like The Australian, The Telegraph, Herald Sun, etc. When entering the search criteria, make sure you enter "graphic design" including the inverted commas.

SEEK
http://www.seek.com.au
Big general employment site. Don't use the Quick Search facility - go straight to the Full Search page and select "graphics" in pop-up menu for Occupation. [Dorota Roslaniec]

"Great site to wander into when you're new to Australia. Here I am, starting to learn about how to find a specific job with an environmental graphic design marketing and admin background and wondering where to start. Thanks for the boost."
