09.11.17 / The Composer Captured / The Sound Room

In this month’s The Composer Captured, we put down the camera and pick up the beat to focus on The Sound Room.

Painting with sound

Established in 2003 by New Zealand composers/producers Tom Fox and Marshall Smith, The Sound Room is a highly-regarded contributor to Getty Images Music. As well as supplying tracks for our library, the award-winning duo writes and produces music and sound design for film, TV, games, theatre, artists and bands across the world.

We catch up with Marshall in our 5 minute Q&A to learn a little about his work and motivation.

How does someone get into stock music content creation?

For us it was about having a large and growing collection of original music – and looking for outlets to generate income and exposure. We have been with Pump Audio since 2007, which later became Getty.

What interests you about stock music?

It’s a pretty easy way of getting large amounts of our original music out there to get used. Also, it’s very light on administration and cost from our end!

What kind of music do you create?

Anything they will let us! We work across all styles/genres – it keeps us flexible and it’s creatively lots of fun.

Who do you go to for advice?

My mum! And my partner. And my business partner. And his wife!

What’s your plan for the next 48 hours?

Finishing off a Prince tribute track with an amazing live band. I’m just writing the brass section parts now.

If you could have one super power, what would it be?

To spread joy.
