09.01.15 / Three important rules in business that are easily forgotten.

It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day of any business. Deadlines, stress, motivation and life outside of work (yes, I’ve heard people have this) can make you forget what fundamentally makes you successful. At Jalapeno HQ we think it’s important to stop, breath and cross check to ensure we are living up to our vision and developing our skill set.Here is a small sample of three important rules our studio lives by:

1: TREAT YOUR CLIENT’S BUSINESS LIKE IT IS YOUR OWN

Love their product. Live, breathe and know it well. Figure out what your client wants, analyse who they’re selling to and make sure your design is targeted at these people with a clear and appealing message.It is always good to speak up if you think that a direction guided by the client might not be suitable or could be executed differently with better results. You’re being employed as an industry professional and your client should value your input. Just make sure you can back yourself up with some reliable knowledge, case studies or solid data.

2: ASK QUESTIONS AND GET INVOLVED

Whether you’ve just finished school or you’re an industry veteran, there is always something new and exciting to learn. Speaking with people in your industry can be hugely rewarding to your career. Learn from their experiences and try and avoid making their mistakes. Ask whom they trust on their supplier lists and why. Study their working processes and, if you can, try to do it better. Read the books, visit the websites and research the people that inspire them. It’s equally important to speak with the next generation entering your industry. They will educate you on new technologies, software and trends that may inspire your next big project.If you don’t know where to start, think about joining an association linked to your profession. 3: HAVE A PURPOSE

As an industry professional, what are your values? Why did you get into your industry in the first place and what is it about you or your business that makes you relevant or different? Answering these questions will help you decide who you want to work with. If you’re new to the industry, use these questions as a tool to help make a list of people you admire and want to learn from or work with. Ask yourself these questions over and over as your business grows and use them to give your business an operational mantra.Hopefully you have found this little snippit into our studio process valuable.
