FAQ

It's a brand-driven world. Yaaaaay! Sir Hector Laing said: 'Buildings age and become dilapidated. Machines wear out. People die. But what live on are the brands.' Except the unremembered, we might say. Sir Hec knows brands: he's a UK biscuit king; and what else is a biscuit (or a copy paper or a beverage), but a brand? Because branding is about connections, emotions, attitudes and world-view, it's the graphic designer's natural field. Ironically, while branding talks money, graphic design speaks a vocabulary of the aesthetic. So—the demands of brands—how do they affect designers?

Jack Yan
Jack Yan founded Jack Yan & Associates (http://jya.net), one of the world's first virtual firms, in 1987. His company is based or represented in over a dozen countries worldwide. Among his company's interests are business consulting, imaging, software and media, including the fashion magazine brand Lucire. He writes on topics, ranging from branding and business responsibility to fashion and typography, in numerous publications worldwide and is a regular international speaker. His personal site is at http://www.jackyan.com.

Last month, Jack Yan became one of the first people to extend a web site brand into a print magazine. He shares his principles with audiences, including the values that consumers seek in brands in the 2000's, based on his work with Lucire, on the book Beyond Branding, and with the Medinge Group think-tank in Sweden.
