AGDA Victoria presents another seminar in our popular Business of Design series for 2004

Tuesday 17 August 2004
6.30pm for 7.15pm start
Felix (Upstairs)
43 Fitzroy Street St Kilda

Hear how to brief and work with fellow professionals, from the initial idea, to working together on the day. Stuff like: avoiding surprises and misunderstandings, by defining the communications objective and each person's role in getting there. How to conduct yourself when art directing on a photoshoot. How to negotiate with an illustrator when a change is needed. How to inspire copy that partners good design. In short, the skills that help everybody do their best work for your client. Including you. Powerful.

Hugh Peachey, Photograher
Since graduating from RMIT in 2000 Hugh has worked out of the Bakehouse studios in Collingwood shooting mainly for advertising companies and design firms. Clients include, Adidas, Brumbys, Melbourne uni, Jay Jays, AXA, Origin, Yellow Pages, Tennis Australia.

The core of Hugh's talk will revolve around the issues pertaining to the briefing process as it relates to the photographer and art director alike. He will look at the individual aspects and issues relating to the briefing process from start to end product, i.e.- "How do does one light a stick figure".

Dean Gorissen, Illustrator
Dean is an award winning Illustrator with an art direction background. After majoring in Graphic Design in 1982, his illustrations have appeared in a variety of Australian publications, including the Australian Financial Review 'Boss' magazine, and in a regular weekly feature in The Sunday Age 'Sunday Life' magazine. He has illustrated covers for a number of books, notably the Australian best selling series' 'Wicked' and 'Deadly' by Paul Jennings and Morris Gleitzman, recently optioned for development as an animated TV series, with Dean designing and developing characters and environments. He has co-created (with writer Matt Zurbo) the childrens book, 'I Got a Rocket!', currently being developed as an animated series as a US/Australian co-production. Hugh's illustrations will appear in the 2004 Communication Arts Illustration Annual, Design Down Under and The Melbourne Art Directors Club Annual, winning an MADC Silver Award in 2001. He is an active member of Illustrators Australia, and lectures in illustration at the Northern Metropolitan Institute. His Illustration work can be viewed at: http://www.deangorissen.com

Faye Broberg, Corporate and Commercial Writer
Faye has conceived and written ideas for products and services you may have driven, worn, eaten, invested-in or fed to your pets. Currently freelancing with graphic designers, advertising agencies and Government departments, Faye served her time as a Senior Writer and Group Head at JWT, George Patterson, Compton and Clemenger Harvie amongst others. Faye also lectures in Writing for Advertising in the Bachelor of Communication (Advertising) at RMIT and is currently completing a biography on Australias most published commercial photographer, Brian Brandt.

Faye's talk is titled "Lorum Ipsum is my name." A comment on some brief encounters with graphic designers where she has been asked to merely fill in the holes left for copy. Changing Lorem ipsum into meaningful words. Faye will use this example to expound on how designer's can get the best out of a writer by bringing him or her in at the start. The right words can help the design and make it strong - this is the way to inspire copy that partners good design.
