Aaah! The joys of random web-surfing. It's a funny thing where you can end up online.
AHDS (Arts and Humanities Data Service) Visual Arts is a free online archive of a whole range of amazing British design and art collections, covering both professional, student and teaching works. Some of the collections are within the AHDS site, and others reside in various universities around the UK.
Some of the highlights are:
Design magazine 1965-1974
London College of Communication
Over 2500 digital images of Design magazine with a complementary Design Online catalogue that provides readable full-screen image, and matching text files!

*Design Council Slide Collection
Manchester Metropolitan University
Over 9000 slides illustrating various aspects of mainly British design from 1945-1990

If you ever have a need to research examples of British design (any discipline) since 1945, this is probably the best place to start. It is also a good place to track down selected international design archives as well, such as the Icograda Congress posters.
This is the index page for their Design collections:

The listing of all (design and art) collections is at:
http://vads.ahds.ac.uk/collections/index.html
There are also comprehensive search facilities as well.
Warning to casual browsers! Not all of the collections have been set up for easy browsing by casual users as the main purpose is to support researchers. My advice is to use the search facilities (ie. Google-style queries) if you can't find an easy-to-browse representation of the contents. Perserverance will be paid off!
