Design Montreal Open House: Montreal's designers welcome you

Following Montreal's recent designation as a UNESCO City of Design, the Design Montreal Office, in partnership with the professional design community, is launching Doors Open on Design Montreal. The first edition is being held on Saturday, 5 May 2007.

British Design Innovation launches Innovation Bank

No service, product or proposition ever came to market without the intellectual knowledge and skills of several expert parties. Providing those parties with an accessible and equitable means of trading IP is beneficial to all concerned. Importantly, it assists originators to build their own asset base through IP license, royalty, equity and IP buy-out deals; at the same time as enabling access to lower risk innovation for groups from SME size to global players.

What do we call ourselves now?
by Steven Heller

In a world of brand specialists and information architects, is it enough to call ourselves
'graphic designers' without sounding either overly specialised or obsolete?

O P I N I O N

Should design education be a criteria for professional practice?

Many member associations require a combination of formal education and work experience to become a professional member. However, the design education landscape includes a broad range of public and private programmes, with full-time, part-time and continuing education options. We want to know your opinion on how design education should relate to professional practice.

State your opinion http://www.icograda.org/web/opinion

Etapes introduces podcasts

With more than 10 years experience publishing étapes, the authoritative French language design publication, and its quarterly English-langauge sister publication étapes:international, Pyramyd is continuing to expand its media channels with the launch the étapes blog.

A new feature of the blog is weekly podcasts about design, including interviews, short movies and event reviews. Etapes: le podcast du design graphique currently includes eight episodes. Interested listeners can subscribe to the podcast for free through iTunes.

Indonesia launches One Globe One Flag

The aim of 'One Globe One Flag' International Poster Exhibition is to raise the level of awareness in the importance of togetherness in overcoming multi-dimensional problems in the world. The globe and flag are physical attributes in universal symbolism that posses implicit meaning. 'One Globe One Flag' is a concept that respects international social, cultural and geographical diversity in order to give birth to a series of interpretations that imply enthusiasm, aspirations and awareness in order to create a better world-together.

07 Shrinkage Worldwide Awards jury-members selection

The Shahneshin Foundation is now accepting nominees and candidacy in becoming Jury-Member for the Shrinkage Worldwide Awards. The Shrinkage Worldwide Awards now in its third year, encourages, promotes, and rewards critical thinking and visualising. Shrinkage Worldwide Awards include poster-works from New York, London, Vienna, Beijing, Santiago - just some of the global locations where artists, designers, scholars and thinkers have drawn to enter into the 2006 Shrinkage Worldwide Awards. If you’re interested to be considered among the candidates and nominees as a jury-member for the next edition of the Shrinkage Worldwide Awards, please submit a cover letter + a concise resume + a portfolio that includes samples of your most important and representative design and research works. You need to specify what your responsibility in each project was. This application material would portray you as a potential jury member for the 07 SWA.

DG magazine goes virtual

This week sees the end of era as DG magazine ceases publication as ink on paper and moves with the times to take up residence on the internet. But the new format will not simply be a digitised version of a printed magazine with fake page turns and too difficult to navigate. The type of content that has traditionally been in magazines can now be found freely on the internet. It is there in profusion, if only you had the time to search for it. Magazines can be very good at making sense of chaos, distilling confusion to bring you the crystal clear essence of information and inspiration. So the needs of readers have changed and a new publishing model is required.
