red dot award: communication design 2006 results
It was a worthy highlight and end of this year's red dot award: communication design - the festive awards ceremony on Friday 8 December 2006 in the Essen Philharmonic Concert Hall, which was attended by some 800 guests from eight nations to celebrate the winners of this year's red dot award: communication
design. The tension with regards to the honorary prizes for the best works of each category, however, kept mounting during the ceremony, because the winners were not announced until the very end of the awards presentation.

5 International Competition results: NAGOYA DESIGN DO! 2006
A design work needs a "function". Then, "What is function?" Simply put, it should be to work or operate in a proper way to fulfill a purpose. But in our Chinese characters, it also means "the particular role of an individual element as it depends on other elements in the whole". In the human environment the function of a created work must not be independent of its surroundings; rather it must operate interactively, act and react to its environment. Function, therefore, is a truly social concept.

Iranian Typography Now
by Behrouz, http://www.pingmag.jp
One of the qualities that makes current Iranian graphic design unique is its typography. The country has a rich history of visual arts and moreover the better part of this heritage consists of calligraphy. Throughout the times calligraphy has been inventing and reinventing itself and has influenced other forms of art. The incorporation of calligraphy into Islamic architecture is a fine example of this union. In recent times these treasures of beauty and harmony have inspired painters, sculptors, and in particular: graphic designers.

Design Indaba: Tree planting offsets carbon emissions from conference
Some 500 trees were planted in Soweto, Johannesburg, earlier this week to ensure that the Design Indaba Conference, a Cape Town-based design conference judged the best in the world, is carbon-neutral. This was the final planting in a 2000 tree project to offset the carbon emissions generated by the 2006 conference held in February 2006. All future annual conferences will also be carbon-neutral.

SDGQ issues policy statement on spec work
The Société des designers graphiques du Québec (SDGQ) has issued an official policy statement against the practice of speculative work. The SDGQ recommends clients select a designer according to a portfolio review of previous work. In addition to reviewing portfolios, the SDGQ advises that interviewing candidates is an excellent opportunity to gauge a studio’s comprehension of the project. Should a creative proposal be deemed essential, invited studios should be compensated for the work. "In any event, contests based on the execution of speculative work do not help the customer. Very often, the results are not based on well documented or critical evaluation, two components of the process of design and the designer-client relationship." The Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC), the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario (RGD) and the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) advocate a common policy. SDGQ and GDC are Professional Members of Icograda.
Recently, the topic of ‘spec’ proposals has generated a lot of discussion on design blogs - including SDGQ’s own Oeilpouroeil.ca.
