Readings on Design

Brad Blondes, a second year graphic design MFA student at Yale University, is collecting titles of designer's favourite readings on design, from designers from all over the world. Through his research, he hopes to collect a variety of cultures and nations in order to expand the designer's reader list. The idea is to add titles to the list that reflect what kind of readings were or are influential for the specific region and design context.

Building Letters 3

The third issue of Building Letters is dedicated to Sri Lanka and Thailand, and features interesting articles by Tom de Gay, Nick Shinn, Max Kisman, Fiona Ross and Donald Beekman. As usual, it contains a CD with free fonts, this time donated by Pieter Rosmalen,  Seonil Yun, José Scaglione, David Brezina, José Louis Coyotl Mixocatl, Stefan Hattenbach, Bram Pitoyo, Tomá˚ Brousil, Richard Kegler, Veronika Burian, Jürgen Weltin and Ludmila Lorenz. All fonts are OpenType and with one exception, they contain glyphs necessary for typesetting of all Latin-script European languages (complete Unicode set Latin Extended A), so apart from Czech, you can set Maltese, Welsh, or Esperanto in them; some faces contain special features, alternating glyphs, decorative glyphs, alternating numerals, ligatures, or small caps.

By purchasing one of the 1000 copies (numbered by hand), you not only receive a CD with 25 fonts by renowned typographers, you will also make a significant contribution to the aid of those whose lives aren't as lucky as yours or mine.

Members only: An association’s quest for environmental accountability
by Richard Grefé and Maria Emmighausen

Like many associations in the independent sector, AIGA prides itself on being socially
responsible by articulating an appropriate position on relevant causes and issues. The
environment, as we all know, is something we should respect and protect.
Yet it took a single “a ha!” moment to turn the rhetorical commitment into a broad agenda of
actions which have changed the means by which AIGA achieves its mission and goals.
