BIO 20 announces design competition winners
The Icograda Excellence Award winning HIT corporate visual identity by Gigodesign is just one of the 350 exhibits from 17 different countries on display at BIO 20 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Winners were announced on 5 October at the Fuzine Castle where this year's exhibition is being held.
In selecting this piece for the Icograda Excellence Award, the international jury said, "The corporate identity programme successfully incorporates a diversity of subsidiary and product identities into a clearly organised and integrated system. Outstanding features are the manner in which colour and shape is used to unify the diversity of brand personalities as well as projecting a common visual language that underpins the organisation's corporate philosophy and personality. The system's flexibility and two and three-dimensional applications show true ingenuity."

Call for submissions: +DESIGN
+DESIGN is a new Icograda program that collects inspiring design solutions. It’s about leading creatively and celebrating creative problem solving that makes a difference. Icograda is inviting submissions that showcase unique design solutions to complex communications challenges. "We are hoping that both our members and the public will get involved in identifying projects that exemplify Icograda's ideals of leading creatively," says Don Ryun Chang, Icograda's President Elect.
The online component of the campaign will include both an archive of the case studies and a blog to promote dialogue about the notion of leading creatively.
The program was developed by Rethink Advertising in Vancouver, Canada. "I want to acknowledge the work done by Ian Grais and the team in Vancouver to develop this idea," said Chang. "From the original concepts through to the final execution, they’ve captured the spirit of Icograda and its mission."

Baiao de Dois Filmes Identity
Gustavo Machado, RGD – Canada
Baiao de Dois Filmes is a small production company located in Brazil. The identity evokes the legacy of the industrial revolution and the dawn of mass media, by representing an old 8mm film projector formed by distorted and distressed letterforms.

Giving it all away
David Robertson, FDIA, Design Institute of Australia
reprinted with permission from Artichoke (August 2006)
Nothing arouses more emotion in design circles than free pitching - competing for a design job by providing free work. This practice is widely condemned by professional design organisations, including the Design Institute of Australia (DIA), but it continues to occur. Why is it so difficult to stamp out? Surely giving away the only things you have to sell, your time and your expertise, doesn't make good sense?

GDC works with VANOC to create fair pitch process
Vancouver 2010 is looking for a creative genius (or team of them) to develop the mascots for Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic Games - with the full support of the GDC. In 2004 the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada [GDC] lobbied the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee [VANOC] for more appropriate design competition processes and more recently local GDC Executives Yves Rouselle MGDC (President, GDC/BC) and Mark Busse MGDC (President-Elect, GDC/BC) met with VANOC Creative Services Directors Ali Gardner and Leo Obstbaum. With valuable input from BC Ethics Chair and GDC National Ethics Committee member Linda Coe, the GDC team helped VANOC finalise language and procedures for the newly announced mascot design request for proposals.
The GDC is thrilled to announce that VANOC has adopted virtually all GDC guidelines and suggestions and has created a fair, equitable and professional RFP that meets with GDC’s approval and support. For those opposed to spec design competitions, this is a momentus occasion in Canadian and international design indeed.

The EIDD Stockholm Declaration© - Design for All
Design for All has roots both in Scandinavian functionalism in the 1950s and in ergonomic design from the 1960s. There is also a socio-political background in Scandinavian welfare policies, which in Sweden in the late 1960s gave birth to the concept of “A society for all” referring primarily to accessibility. This ideological thinking was streamlined into the United Nations Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities, adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 1993. The focus of the UN Standard Rules on accessibility in a clear equality context has inspired the development of the Design for All philosophy, which became a generally accepted concept in EIDD at its Annual General Meeting in Barcelona in 1995.
The EIDD Stockholm Declaration was adopted on 9 May 2004, at the Annual General Meeting of the European Institute for Design and Disability in Stockholm.

Icograda Design Week in Seattle workshop results
on display at UN in New York
>From 9-12 July 2006, more than 70 design students from US, Canada, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East participated in the International Design Student Workshop that took place during Icograda Design Week in Seattle. Students worked in small classroom environments led by leading design educators and practitioners. Each group selected one of the Millennium Development Goals and students created concepts to communicate that goal in 11x17 poster format. The event was organised by Icograda in partnership with the AIGA Center for Cross-Cultural Design and was hosted by the University of Washington.
Selected posters from the International Student Workshop will be on display at the UN Secretariat building for the week of 16-20 October 2006.
