2006 Principal Prince Claus Award to Reza Abedini
On Wednesday, 13 December 2006, the Iranian graphic designer Reza Abedini (1967 Iran) will be presented with this year's Principal Prince Claus Award of EUR 100,000 at the Muziekgebouw aan't IJ in Amsterdam. Reza Abedini is a graphic designer and a professor of graphic design and visual culture at Tehran University. He emphasises the relationship between visual tradition and modern form, encourages research in the long and rich history of Persian art and calligraphy, and nurtures talent in the younger generations. Reza Abedini is granted the Principal Prince Claus Award in recognition of his personal creativity in producing superb graphic design and his individual skill in adapting the knowledge and achievements of Iran's artistic heritage, making it new and compelling today. The award values and draws attention to the diversity of Iranian culture both historic and contemporary. It recognises the impact of graphic design as a powerful global medium of communication, and highlights the tradition and role of graphic design both in the laureate's own country and across the world.

PIKITUP Environmental Management logo
by Roy Clucas, DSA - South Africa
For Roy Clucas, effectively launching a brand to compete with all branded entities was not easy. It is challenging to convince public service personnel to employ design and naming principles in diametric opposition to their conservative norms. The initiative gained acceptance amongst a few key supporters by tapping into the radical social changes that were paramount at that time.

Cuba, Si! Life and design on the embargoed archipelago
by Robert L. Peters, FGDC
The Cuban Revolution of 1959 was a watershed event that bestowed on Cubans extraordinary gifts of social justice and equality, dramatic advances in public health and education, and an equitable distribution of the national wealth. It also brought unprecedented attention to the Caribbean, placed Cuba in opposition to the U.S. in the midst of the Cold War, and has unalterably changed the course of history and politics throughout the Americas. “Limited means beget new forms, invite creation…” wrote Georges Braque, the famous French painter. His thesis that progress lies not in extension, but in a deeper knowledge of limitations offers an apt depiction for the lot and creative life of modern Cuba—just as necessity gives birth to invention, post-Revolutionary Cubans have had to exercise ingenuity, inventiveness and resiliency through more than four decades of ensuing marginalization and economic hardship.

Promoting a new standard definition for “designer”
AIGA testified this month before the commission on redefining the
standard occupational classifications for "designer" used by the U.S.
government in its economic research. This is another step in an effort
that AIGA has pursued consistently for ten years. The occupational
classification for designer is at least two decades old and captures
the functions of a designer prior to the introduction of the Macintosh
and securely anchored in the realm of commercial artist.
The U.S. Department of Labor's contractor for the Occupational
Information Network (O*NET), the government's database on occupational
characteristics, is conducting a survey to gain a sense of the
relevance of the current definition. The survey will be sent to 80
opinion leaders within the profession, and their responses will govern
the future definition. The definition is important to designers, since
it governs both the literature about the profession that the
government issues, but also influences the economic data collected
about the profession.

3 Ecodesign conference by the Design Centre Rhone-Alps
28 September, Lyon, France
Considering all impacts on the environment from the very beginning
of a project and for all aspects (technical, market, use) is a way of
innovating insomuch as this opens more possibilities of evolution and
change of the offer of products and services of the companies. This year,
the conference aims at presenting case studies from companies with
– among other themes – a focus on a quite unknown method in France:
Cradle to Cradle Design.
The conference is in French and English (translation).
Conference free of charge – registration kindly requested.
