Design, Development and Questions of Direction, Part II
by Tony Fry, Design Philosophy Papers

The economic growth rate of newly industrialised nations and their consumer classes, means that the ecological impact of the global population is growing rapidly. This is a far more significant factor than raw numbers. In fact with current developmental trends, the global population could fall (which it will not do) while impacts could go on rising (which they will do). Obviously suggesting the standard of living of half the world's population should remain low in order to preserve the high standard of the advantaged is neither ethical nor political. Another way has to be found - as will be seen in a moment. Against this backdrop three kinds of relationships between design and development can be contemplated.

O P I N I O N

Design and sustainable development: Where would you situate your design practice among Fry’s relationship models?

In this week's Feature, Tony Fry proposes three kinds of relationships between design and development for contemplation.

We would like to know where you situate your design practice in relation to sustainable development.

State your opinion http://www.icograda.org/web/opinion

F R O M  P R E V I O U S  O P I N I O N

Do you agree with Fry’s thesis?

25%
No. Developed nations and underdeveloped nations are still a relevant construct.
44%  Yes. Designers need to reframe development models for a sustainable future.
34%  Maybe. We don’t yet know enough about globalisation to craft a new model.

Totals shown may be more or less than 100% due to rounding.

Creativity Courses in Europe and New York: Spring / Summer 06

The Creativity Workshop will be holding summer workshops in Europe (Crete, Provence, Florence, Barcelona, Prague, Dublin and Bruges) and spring workshops in New York.

Founded in 1993, the Creativity Workshop is dedicated to teaching people about their creativity and how to use it in all aspects of life, work,
and creative expression. The Creativity Workshop helps people believe in and develop their imagination through using a unique series of exercises
in memoirs, creative writing, visual arts, sense perception, brainstorming, and storytelling. In a non-competitive, nurturing atmosphere, these workshops help participants develop creative skills, expanded sense perception, innovative problem solving, inspired brainstorming, and new ways of looking at life as exciting and transformative. The price of the New York workshop is $650, tuition only. European workshop prices start at $1,650, including tuition and 9 nights accommodations. The only requirements for the Creativity Workshop are curiosity about the creative process and a sense of playfulness.

The calendar for the New York and Europe workshops is:

The Graphic Imperative website is now live

After many months of design, preparation and implementation, The Graphic Imperative website is now live. The Graphic Imperative is a select retrospective of forty years of international socio-political posters. Themes include dissent, liberation, racism, sexism, human rights, civil rights, environmental and health concerns, AIDS, war, literacy and tolerance - collectively providing a window to an age of great change. Focusing on the issues of our turbulent times, these 121 posters endeavour to show the social, political and aesthetic concerns of many cultures in a single exhibition through delineating themes and contrasting political realities. For more information and to order the 80-page colour catalogue for the exhibition, please visit: http://www.thegraphicimperative.org

Branding for Nonprofits
New York, United States
By DK Holland, Published by Allworth Press

Testimonials:

“DK Holland makes a persuasive case for the importance of branding to nonprofits and has provided a very practical how-to guide. In addition, the process she describes engages the board and staff in a concrete analysis of the mission and values of the organization.” —Michael Davidson, Chair, Governance Matters

“Branding for Nonprofits is a great how-to manual on the proper use and long term care of not only your elusive brand, but the creative-types you might have to endure to realize it.” —Eric J. Olson, Creative Director, Brooklyn Academy of Music

“It is very helpful to have a book that is not only a resource for designers, but also talks directly to clients. I am going to make it required reading for all of my nonprofits!” —Sylvia Harris, Information Design Strategist
