Icograda Design Perspectives Seminar

12 December 2002 (from 18:00 to 20:00)
Barcelona (Spain)

Following the Icograda Regional Meeting on the theme of ‘Graphic Design for Social Causes’ organised in collaboration with Design for the World, Icograda and ADG-FAD are organising a two-hour Design Perspectives Seminar at the ADG Building in Barcelona. Lectures from Karen Blincoe, Tiffany Turkington and Mervyn Kurlansky will give participants an international perspective on Graphic Design with themes such as Sustainability, graphic design in South Africa and how inspiration comes into designers’ mind.

Sustainability -  the New Design  Challenge
By Karen Blincoe (Denmark), Vice President Icograda

The lecture tracks the development from the ecological and green design movement in the late eighties to sustainability and the challenge this poses for designers today. Discusses why designers  should  take sustainability on board and what the implications might be!

Karen Blincoe is a Danish graphic designer and educationalist. She lectures on subjects relating to visual communication, design education and sustainable development, in both Scandinavia and the UK. Karen is the chairman of the Educational Council for the Arts, Architecture, Design and Conservation for the Ministry of Culture (Copenhagen). She was appointed head of department for Visual Communication at Danmarks Designskole, Copenhagen in 1991; has been a member of the Arts Council; is a Fellow of the CSD; and is a member of the Association of Danish Designers. Educated in England, Karen established KB Design (a graphic design consultancy) in 1984, and 02 UK in 1989 (environmental design). She is presently dedicated to establishing a centre for creativity and sustainability encompassing both graduate and postgraduate study. She was recently granted the ‘Danish Design Vision Award 2002.’

The identity of South African design
By Tiffany Turkington (South Africa), Icograda Secretary General

The presentation will focus on the identity of South African design in all its various forms. It will look at the notion of a national identity in relation to the branding of a nation through the flag, the coat of arms, and the various government bodies. It will also concentrate on the diverse design within the country, from the high branding and corporate identity of major design companies, to the more informal displays of branding in the rural areas. The issue of globalisation will all be discussed in further detail in relation to technology, information accessibility and the influx of global Branding.

Tiffany is head of the Graphic Design and Multimedia Design Departments at Design Centre, Johannesburg. Besides being active in teaching, her role includes academic planning, resource management, and staff co-ordination. Experienced in international liaison, Tiffany is passionate about advancing design and design communities in developing countries, by increasing levels of communication and interaction.

Influences and Obsessions
By Mervyn Kurlansky (United Kingdom), Icograda President Elect

Mervyn Kurlansky traces the experiences and observations that have influenced his work from the beginning of his career in the early 1960´s to the present time. His talk will be illustrated with visual images of his work and the various environments he has lived and worked in, from his youth in South Africa to the swinging 60´s of London to the tranquility of Denmark and his travels to more than fifty countries around the world. He will cover the Pentagram years, the design philosophy that was developed amongst the partners and will share many design anecdotes gathered during his forty years of design practice. But his presentation is more than just a record of design in the latter half of the twentieth century, it is a pointer to the future - a vision for twenty-first century graphic design.

Born in South Africa, Mervyn trained in London, then practiced with Knoll International and Crosby/Fletcher/Forbes before co-founding Pentagram in 1972. Since 1993 Mervyn has lived and worked in Denmark. Mervyn is a prolific designer, consultant, author, lecturer, and juror. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, the International Society of Typographic Designers, the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacture & Commerce and a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale and Dansk Designerer. Mervyn's work has been widely published, has won many international awards, and is in numerous permanent collections around the world. Mervyn was chairman of the Icograda London Design Seminar from 1996 to 1999.

Danish Design Vision Award 2002

On the first of November this year, ICIS received Danish Design’s National Vision Award 2002. The award committee wrote that ICIS was granted this award “for its initiatives in placing sustainability on the Design agenda. Most of all, the award recognises ICIS’ achievements in creating a framework which grounds the project in a concrete, physical structure. ICIS’ great strength is its ability to work out of a vision, with an idealistic approach to the matters of sustainability and design, while at the same time holding on to a practical mindset. The Jury wishes to praise ICIS for its persistent work in building a bridge between theoretical and practical approaches to sustainability and design, as well as between designers and manufacturers. It is initiatives such as ICIS which will help carry design into the future, and the Jury calls for the Centre’s ideas to be communicated to such an extent, that it will have the impact and gather the momentum which it deserves. “

Mapping; “Anything can be mapped, and most things are: places, businesses, galaxies, histories, bodies, philosophies, devices and databases...” A glance at Mapping confirms the wide range of projects that fall into the category of cartography and reveals that there has been, up to now, a surprising lack of information on this subject for designers.
