Graphic Design for Social Causes
Icograda Regional Meeting
11 > 12 December 2002
Barcelona, Spain
On 11 > 12 December 2002, an Icograda Regional Meeting on the theme of Graphic Design for Social Causes will be held in Barcelona, Spain, in collaboration with Design for the World. This meeting will be a unique opportunity for participants to meet and to discuss how designers can work and support social causes. This will also be a good opportunity to create or revitalise links with other colleagues involved in the running of design associations.
For Icograda and Design for the World, the primary objective of holding this Icograda Regional Meeting is to investigate how graphic designers, both as individuals and as collectively as professional societies, can have an impact on social issues, and what is needed to ensure that this impact is positive and effective. The objective is also to bring graphic designers in direct contact with people working in different social and humanitarian projects, to reflect together on the role graphic designers can play in those contexts.
Graphic designers already contribute to social causes. They are often contacted by organisations and individuals to design a logo, a poster, a leaflet. However worthwhile this may be, it is surely not the only way graphic designers can help. This Icograda Regional Meeting aims to investigate how graphic designers can make a larger and more meaningful contribution.

Radost Komunizma/The Joy Of Communist Being
By Damir Gamulin, HDD, Croatia
Poster for the lectures by american left oriented writer and theorist Michael Hardt; with expected desire to create appropriate promotional look I also felt a need to comment the event; I played on the theme of “western theory meets post-communist” experience. Interestingly, the design survived the lectures and continued as a T-shirt (Pop) and multimedia archives (Info) of the lectures and the talk.

Designing Identities: The Work of Teenage Girls
By Susan Hodara
The bag that 13-year-old Ariel carries to dance class used to be the top of her jeans - until she cut off the legs and hand-stitched a straight seam just below the crotch. Original pockets intact, she has added another, a rectangle of blue flannel with yellow stars cut from outgrown pajamas and sewn unevenly into the inside back with embroidery thread, bright red on one side, soft pink on the other…

Do you consider yourself to be successful?
Success is, of course, a matter of individual standards and evaluation, but we want to know if you deem yourself to be a successful designer in general terms.

Do you contribute to design magazines?
As we are interested to know all about your professionalhabits, we asked you if you contribute materials to various design magazines, be it your work or an article.
It seems that about two-thirds of you (72 percent) never make any contributions to design magazines, whether it means entering your work or writing an article. Just 12 percent do it very ofetn while 16 percent said they do it from time to time. There is obviously a room for improvement in this area of your practice since making your work known through magazines is surely a good way to get more clients and better work.
Do you contribute to design magazines?
Yes, quite often 12%
Rarely 16%
Never 72%

What is Graphic Design: This is a complex question for even the most experienced designer to answer and yet this is the starting point for anyone contemplating a career in graphic design. There are currently hundreds of highly illustrated books which showcase the work of contemporary designers but resources and books that address this question are few and far between. The ones that do tend to be academic essays or reference books with few illustrations.

user_mode is an international, multidisciplinary symposium looking at interactive art and design practices. Held at Tate Modern from 9 to 11 May, it will examine one of the key concerns for many creative practitioners - engaging the emotions of the audience/user. Questions for discussion may include: does interactivity promise a more profound experience than more traditional responses to art and design? What does it add? How is it measured? Does interactive work offer more than conventional cinema, theatre, painting or architecture in emotional terms? Is there more sense of participation? We are now calling for papers from artists, designers, theorists, technologists, scientists, architects, musicians, philosophers and others interested in this field. The call for papers is aimed at all disciplines that can contribute to this discussion. Fresh perspectives will be sought by bringing together different disciplines to share their views.
