The Society of Graphic Designers of Canada, Vancouver Island Chapter (GDC VI), announces that it has received a $10,000 US grant from Sappi Paper's Ideas that Matter program.
The Ideas that Matter program was developed to support the use of design for the public good and Sappi annually awards one million dollars worldwide to support the program. The Design Cares Project was one of 25 projects out of 189 submissions chosen for this grant.

Do you feel design exhibitions reflect the true state of the profession?
As we saw previously, the majority of designers stated a preference for the specialised exhibitions focusing on a specific subject to the general overviews of design production. We wanted to know if you feel that design exhibitions really reflect the true state of design profession.
According to your answers, designe exhibitions generally seem to have a problem reflecting the true state of the profession. Over a half of you (64 percent) thinks design exhibitions don’t really do that, whereas 22 percent of you stated they perform the task to some extent. 14 percent of you think design exhibitions reflect the true state of the profession.

The International Instiute for Information Design and the Department of Innovation, Design and Product Development at Maelardalen University invite you to consider submitting a paper for the 2 IIID Expert Forum Manual Design on "Manuals for Global Use" scheduled to take place at Eskilstuna, Sweden from 5 to 6 November this year. The Expert Forum on "Manuals for global use" will focus on the development and usage of visual instructions for technical products. The increasing complexity and variety of such products makes them more difficult to use effectively. Pictorial and textual instructions, whether on paper or on screen, whether static or dynamic, attempt to counteract this trend. To overcome language barriers information designers focus on pictures, drawings and pictograms. At the same time they might fall prey to cultural differences in the perception and interpretation of images.
