The Art of Saying Nothing
by Veronique Vienne
There is a good reason why most of us are afraid to speak in public: spoken words are a lot less reliable than written ones. At the 2001 Illustration Conference, held in Santa Fe, one of the attendees refused to voice his difference of opinion by coming up to the podium, as it was suggested because, he said “he was not good at the microphone.” Instead he handed out pamphlets in the hallways. It caused a major brouhaha.

Do you think your country educates too many designers?
In some countries there is just one design school, in others there are several. Some schools educate few designers while others produce multitudes of graduates every year. It all depends on the size of the market, however, sometimes there are discrepancies that result in too few or too many designers.

Are you an active member of your association?
Some designers just like being members of an association and enjoying the benefits. Others work on a lot of initiatives and projects. There are also those who attend meetings but are reluctant to take more upon themselves. We wanted to know how many of you take on an active role in your association.
This does not look very promising, does it? Just 10 percent of you said you are very active members of your associations whilst just 4 percent can be considered as moderately active. An overwhelming 86 percent are not very active which means they pay their membership fees and enjoy the benefits but don’t do much else. Bear in mind that being an active member helps not just your association but the concrete actions and initiatives can help the state of design in general. Activate yourselves!
