H E A D L I N E S T O R I E S :
Best Wishes, on World Graphics Day
Today, 27 April, is World Graphics Day. Celebrated by graphic designers, communication designers and design associations around the world World Graphics Day marks the formation date of Icograda in 1963. Today is our 39th birthday.
Much has changed in the world since Icograda's formation. The human population has doubled, and we are now 6 billion human beings 'sharing' life on this remarkable planet. Technology has now made it possible for us to communicate with each other on an almost instantaneous basis, regardless of locale. Graphic design has become one of the most influential professions in the information/idea age in which we now live, shaping the daily lives of the world's citizens. Truly amazing tools are at our disposal. And yet so much has not changed... peace still seems elusive, and inequities, injustices, and imbalances continue to be the norm.
Two years ago today Icograda launched its first website, which has since enjoyed 3.8 million hits - from every corner of the globe. Today we launched the 'Friends of Icograda' website, with the goal of further building community. We hope that this worldwide network of Friends can contribute to greater understanding among people and also build bridges where the divides are greatest.
On behalf of the worldwide community of designers that Icograda represents and on behalf the entire Icograda board, I am pleased to convey 'Best Wishes.'
Robert L. Peters
President, Icograda

Posters and promotional brochures for Teatar ITD
by Petrak-Zaja Studio, HDD, Croatia
Teatar ITD - a theatre with a 35-year tradition is famous not only for its theatrical presentations of urban and unconventional themes, but also for its always recognizable and different visual identity, created over the years by legendary Croatian designers (Arsovski, Ilic). In wishing to continue this tradition of rich visual artistry, we present on these posters the idea and spirit of a performance in a simple but graphically impressive way, with special emphasis on the illustration, collage and typography.

UN-TRASHED: Exhibition of Rejected works
by Iva Babaja
Namely, the general truth at the beginning of the 21st century in Croatia is that design is purely a matter of liking. Surely we cannot expect our clients to display a detailed knowledge of design, but is having confidence in designers who already possess this knowledge too much to ask for?

How does the world really see September 11th and its aftermath? If you are in New York, Kabul or the Gaza Strip, maybe everything did change utterly. But what if you are in Africa, in Mongolia, in the Ukraine or Australia or even, for that matter, in a rural village in France? How do you see the world from those perspectives? Who and what are the threats and, alternatively, the sources of hope and optimism?
Spiritus Mundi is a pack of 78 very varied cards, which will be published to mark the first year since September 11th 2001. Each card will be done by a different designer or artist from across the world and each will be based on a word that they have chosen to illustrate. The words will range from those we hear so much of at the moment - terror, war, damage, fear - to others that are perhaps less prevalent - money, hope, tolerance, deception, joke...

The book will be one of the forthcoming volumes in the new series "Poster Collection", jointly published by the Zurich Museum fuer Gestaltung and Lars Mueller Publishers. The book is entitled "Typotektur - Architektonisch behandelte Schriften im Plakat" and it is based on the exhibition with the same title.
