Urban Fare
by Karacters Design Group, GDC, Canada
The downtown dwellers’ grocery experience typically does not match up with the rest of the city’s retail opportunities. The key would be to elevate grocery shopping to the level of other urban experiences - to match the clubs, restaurants, clothing stores and cafes that make up the city dwellers’ lifestyle. Urban Fare was named to embody this city and food dichotomy. Karacters was not only responsible for the name and logo, but also for the interior and exterior environmental graphics and signage, all take-out and restaurant packaging, each piece of price-point signage, menu boarding, uniforms and collateral.

Healing with Design and Communications: An Educational Approach
by Chase A. Rogers
The ideas presented in this essay cross many boundaries. But why should I write this paper now when we are at the very early and controversial stages of a quest to understand how we behave, think, reason and respond using physics, brain theory and vibrational therapies? The reason is that I believe this essay brings together diverse experimental data and theory that support a new educational model for designers. A model that successfully combines design and communication art with innovative healing therapies

What is your professional status?
It has been almost a year since we last asked you about your professional status. As we want to compare your respective situations and changes over the past year, we are repeating this question.
Some designers like being their own bosses while others prefer the security of employment. Or is owning a studio everyone's dream?
Give your opinion and vote at http://www.icograda.org

Do you consider Certification a good idea?
Last week we saw that most of you have no opportunity whatsoever of obtaining a professional certificate or license. Nonetheless, we wanted to know if you considered having such a certificate a good or a bad idea.
Your answers leave no doubt to this issue. An overwhelming majority of 84 percent stated that Cetrification for professional designers is a good idea. Just 12 percent think it is not a good idea and mere 4 percent said ‘maybe’. Although 92 percent of designers have no possibility of obtaining such a Certificate, perhaps your answers will prompt associations to consider such a concept.
Do you consider Certification a good idea?
Yes 84%
Maybe 4%
No 12%

Poster Collection no. 2 - Donald Brun
essay by J. Giroud
ISBN 3-907078-53-5
C: Birkhauser Verlag
A: c/o Springer GmbH, Haberstr. 7, D-69126 Heidelberg, Germany
E: dopfer@springer.de
Donald Brun (1909-1999) was one of the most successful Swiss graphic artists of his days. So why are people sometimes embarrassed when he is mentioned? Brun was the first of a line of designers who thought conceptually and self-confidently within the parameters of the market-place. And thus, at a very high level, he revealed the dubious morality surrounding the "good and beautiful poster". (text e, 64p, 70 ill)

Poster Collection no. 3 - Posters for the Museum
essay by Stuart Bailey
ISBN 3-907078-55-1
C: Birkhauser Verlag
A: c/o Springer GmbH, Haberstr. 7, D-69126 Heidelberg, Germany
E: dopfer@springer.de
As an exhibition venue the Zurich Museum für Gestaltung has an outstanding collection of its own posters. These include icons of design by Lissitzky, Max Bill, Josef Müller-Brockmann a.o. As the commissioning agent, the museum has the understanding that comes from a promoter. Such arresting posters by young and little known authors are still being produced today, providing a seamless survey of work produced in the past twenty years as a kaleidoscope of current graphic styles. (text e, 96p, 150 ill)

Jump Starting Your Experience Strategy
W: http://www.dmi.org/dmi/html/education/seminars/jsye.htm
Dave Norton, PhD., Vice President, Research and Experience Strategy, Yamamoto Moss
Boston, MA
You've nailed your brand strategy. What's next? Brands that do not live up to the experience they promise put themselves at risk of being commoditized. On the other hand, brands that truly deliver a memorable experience reap tremendous rewards in customer loyalty and premium value. The next step is defining your experience strategy. An experience strategy helps you define everything holistically; from how anticipation is built, to the most important interactions your customers have and the memories that they form. This seminar provides hands-on guidance to creating a more memorable experience for the customer.
