Graphic Designers from North America Meet in Vancouver

On 13 and 14 March, 35 delegates from Canada and the US met in Vancouver, Canada to participate in a regional meeting organised by the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda). This Icograda Regional Meeting offered the opportunity to make contacts, exchange information and share experiences regarding the state of graphic design and the visual communication profession in North America. On 15 and 16 March, 200 Canadian, American and foreign participants took part in the international Icograda Design Perspectives symposium entitled 'Environs'002: Design Without Borders' in the auditorium of Emily Carr College of Art and Design.

Does your Association/Guild offer Certification?
We wanted to know if your association or guild offers you a possibility of obtaining a professional certificate or license to graphic designers.
A vast majority of 92 percent of you have no means of receiving a Certificate for professional designers. Just 8 percent of you do, half of which (4 percent) can obtain it through their association, and the other half through a Guild or other organisation.

Colin Banks Passed Away
After a most heroic battle against cancer, Colin Banks passed away peacefuly on, 9 March 2002, aged 70 (January 16, 1932). Vice President Chartered Society of Designers (1974-76) and twice President of the International Society of Typographic Designers (1988-93, 2000-2004), he has numerous awards, such as Buchkunst Ausstellung, 50 Best German Books, Gold Medal Brno, Royal Society of Arts Green Award, BBC Environmental Prize, Technology and Creation Paris Cite, ISTD International, AErespris Denmark. Colin Banks was involved with development programmes in India and family planning in Indonesia and with design education in UK and Denmark and the US. He frequently lectured, and contributed to journals in many countries.

David Tartakover granted the Israel Prize Laureate for Design

David Tartakover is the Israel Prize Laureate for Design, for 2002. This is the highest prize given by the state to people who had great achievements in various fields, this year it is given to design and architecture. In the Letter explaining their choices, the judges described Tartakover as one of the most outstanding designers in Israel.

The second Tim Larsen Scholarship for Design Excellence and the annual AIGA Minnesota Student Design Scholarship will be awarded at the AIGA Minnesota Student Design Conference and Education Summit. Submissions are due no later than March 22. The Tim Larsen Scholarship for Design Excellence is entirely funded by Larsen employees, clients and friends and is administered by AIGA Minnesota. To date, donations have reached nearly $25,000 with the purpose of providing a $5,000 scholarship to one student who has at least a full year of coursework to complete. The AIGA Minnesota Student Design Scholarship is $1,000 scholarship based on the merits of a student's portfolio.

Alberta Chapter North of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDCAN) is hosting PICA 2002, a design conference in Banff, Alberta. The three-day conference will feature prominent speakers from both the design and advertising industry. The theme of the conference is How Far Will You Go? - a question that asks participants to examine their willingness to take risks in terms of creativity, ingenuity, customer service and any other aspect of the profession.
