Deadline 31 May 2002
E: ideas.that.matter@eu.sappi.com
W: http://www.ideaexchange.sappi.com

The Ideas That Matter organised by Sappi has received Icograda's endorsement. Ideas That Matter is a unique initiative that supports creative design for social good. It was launched in 1999 in Europe, North America and Africa and since then, each year, Sappi has committed US$ 1 million towards the implementation of selected cause-related communication campaigns.

Sappi is ready to award financial grants of up to EUR 50,000 to pay your out of pocket expenses and the full implementation of a print campaign. This includes the cost of the photography, illustration, films, paper, printing, mailing, etc.

Together Sappi and the international design community can make a difference to society.

Icograda Regional Meeting to be held in Vancouver
13 > 14 March 2002
Vancouver, Canada
C: Thierry Van Kerm
E: secretariat@icograda.org

On 13-14 March 2002, an Icograda Regional Meeting will be held in Vancouver, Canada. This meeting will be a unique opportunity for participants to meet and to discuss the state of Graphic Design in North America.

For Icograda, the primary objective of holding this first Icograda Regional Meeting in North America is to identify how best to support our Icograda Members and how best to serve Graphic Design in North America. In the past two years, Icograda Regional Meetings have been held in Istanbul, Seoul, Copenhagen, Zagreb, Cuba and Melbourne. These meetings were effective in terms of diverse participation, building valuable contacts, sharing information on topics of concern, and the development of regional agendas for the profession.

by Eddy Yu

After having now been implemented for a month and a half, media scrutiny of the Intellectual Property (Miscellaneous Amendments) Ordinance 2000 is finally beginning to ease. However, summarising the discussions of various media, two areas of concern have been highlighted: the use of pirated computer software, and illegal copying of printed and electronic media. As pointed out by the public and media at the time, the government did not make a close enough study of the Ordinance before implementing it and seriously underestimated its effects on industry.

Is your Art director a designer?

The results of the last week's poll seem to imply that a large percentage of you are not very happy with your collaboration with Art directors. We want to investigate this a bit further to find out possible reasons for your dissatisfaction. We want to see if this has something to do with your Art directors's level of understanding design.

Give your opinion and vote at http://www.icograda.org

F R O M   P R E V I O U S   O P I N I O N

Do you do web design?
We wanted to know how many of you incorporate new media demands into your work.

Your answers clearly show how much graphic design had changed over the past decade. Over a half of you regard web design as a necessary part of your practice, while almost another quarter find it an occasionall necessity. Just a 20 percent of you decided to leave web design to others, which means 80 percent of you are working with this new media either on permanent or occasional basis.

Do you do web design?
Yes, it has become an absolute necessity 56%
Occasionally, when there is a specific demand 24%
No, I leave that to others 20%

Interviews with Mark Pawson, Peter Willberg and Ian Warner reveal the processes behind the work, the intentions and motivations.

The awarenness of the importance of design and designers in an industrial and postindustrial world grew at an unprecedented rate throughout the twentieth century. At the beginning of the new century, we are faced with an even more pronounced role of a seemingly universal design culture, spurred by the confluence of new technologies and new identities forged in the the era of reflexive modernization. Design products address an ever-more segmented market but are almost universally available. A global market is emerging for products of top quality and in-built possibilites of world-wide application.
