Seal the War
by Ling-hung Sophia Shih, TPDA, Taiwan
War is not a children's game. We wish that war could be sealed in a bottle so there would be be no more war in the world. Pray for a peaceful world. This is to remind people that, only if war is sealed, we could possibly obtain real peace.

Contractual copyright issues plague the creative industries
Visual Arts Trends staff report
On a global scale, large publishers, stock conglomerates, and corporate advertisers are increasingly favoring complete copyright surrender on commissioned assignments. While these companies' reasons for this practice are clear, creatives agreeing to work under such conditions are losing revenues in the long term. It's easy to place blame; however, creatives need to remember that the power to change the current state of affairs lies with them.

How important is financial security in terms of your work-motivation?
We all love our work. Sometimes it is more of a challenge, and sometimes it is fairly easy. When it comes down to money, how would you rate its importance to your motivation?

What is your suggestion to your association?
Considering the previous results, in which you stated you expect more from our association, we wanted to know in what areas you think more help would be most important.
According to the results, all areas we have asked you about are of equal importance. Just a few percent difference puts assistance with materials (contracts, prices etc.) in the first place, and events, networking among colleagues and information are all valued practically the same. Let us here mention that in our Membership survey results, members of associations stated Information as number one priority.
What is your suggestion to your association?
More information 33%
More events and networking among colleagues 32%
More real assistance with materials (contracts, prices etc.) 35%

The 7th Graphic Biennial in Tehran
Endorsed by Icograda
Niavarn Cultural Center, Tehran, Iran
C: S. Sarmast, IGDS Secretary
E: sarmast@tinasys.com
The 7th. Biennial of Iranian Graphic Designers will be held in Tehran from 12 February. to 20 April 2002. This Biennial will be held in Niavarn Cultural Center with collaboration of Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts.
This Biennial will not only cover the selective works of Iranian designers but will have guests with their works from other countries. The guest designers will be from France, Italy and Spain which their works will be exhibited in a side exhibition. There will be some side events such as seminars, lectures and other cultural and educational events during that period. This the first time that such a national event will be planed and organized by a privet sector that is Iranian Graphic Designers Society ( IGDS).
We believe that passing the responsibility of this Biennial to a professional board or organization such as IGDS will result great benefits for the profession as well as the participants of the Biennial. Iranian Graphic Designers Society take this as a great achievement for the trade and also a step toward the fully recognition of the society by the government in Iran.
