Shaping the New Face of Vietnam
by William Harald-Wong, wREGA, Malaysia
Poster for my lecture at the Fine Art University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The image depicts the uncertainties which came with the opening of the Vietnamese economy in the mid-90s. The illustration recalls the "How to Draw" instruction books of an earlier era. However, the solutions are not totally applicable as Western proportions and features of the face differ from those of an Asian. Type design by Ke'on mimics street lettering in Vietnam.

The dematerialization of design
A new profile for visual communication design
by Jorge Frascara
This moment of change finds us facing the need to redefine the objectives of design and its working methods. It is not by chance that I use the plural when referring to both objectives and methods. We are no longer seeking universal truths, but an understanding of the plurality and complexity of the issues we have to confront. Some fundamental ideas that define today's design thinking are outlined here, exploring a contemporary notion of design.

How well does the legal system in your country protect your authorship rights?
Considering a recent poll in which just 28 percent of you stated they would seek legal advice in case their authorship rights were abused, we wanted to find out if it is because you think it is no big deal or you have so little faith in the legal system.

Does your association offer you enough assistance?
Questioning the role of design associatins in protecting their members' authorship rights, we went on to ask you if you think you get enough assistance from your associations in other areas as well.
A dissapointing [greater equal]No[less equal] from 63 percent of you clearly indicates that the majority of designers consider their associations should offer more assistance. 24 percent of you stated that they do get occasional assistance and just 13 percent consider the aid from their association to be adequate. No additional comment is necessary here, as the numbers speak for themselves, sadly enough.
Does your association offer you enough assistance?
Yes 13%
Occasionally 24%
No 63%
