Sappi sponsors World Design Convergence 2001
Paper-giant Sappi, the world's leading producer of coated woodfree, fine paper, recently announced its commitment to be the major sponsor of internationally-attended design event, the Sappi World Design Convergence 2001.
The design festival, to be held in mid-September in Johannesburg, South Africa, promises to be Africa's biggest ever gathering of international designers under one roof. It includes the parallel running of the world congresses and general assemblies of both Icograda (International Council of Graphic Design Associations), and the IFI (International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers).
The first multidisciplinary Design Africa Trade Expo, organised by Kagiso Exhibitions also takes place at Sappi World Design Convergence and will showcase African and international design products and services.

Emergence -- Young graphic design in France
By Michel Wlassikov
Etapes Graphiques and Michel Wlassikov conducted a survey amongst young French Graphic designers who gave them their thoughts and comments on burning issues like: Independence, New Medias, Vices and Virtues of the New Technologies, and Money.
The result is an interesting picture in which lots of young designers around the world will probably recognise themselves.

Netherlands Design Institute has closed
Sadly, the Vormgevingsinstituut has closed. The Dutch government followed the advice of its arts council not to renew funding on the basis of the Institute's plans for 2001 to 2004. The good news (as previously reported here) is that Minister Rick van der Ploeg decided to fund Doors of Perception for four years as an independent organisation. He has also appointed a commission to help him decide what to do next regarding national design policy.
